Interviews: AVERTED

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Metalcore/Progressive Metal artist, AVERTED from the UK. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1.Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

Jamie: Syhem and I were discussing ideas and themes of what our potential name could be, I suggested the name “Averted” because I like to use words that could be used for multiple meanings. One of them being through astronomy which is known as “Averted vision” which in Astronomy, means viewing faint and distant objects with peripheral vision, but instead of looking directly at it, it’s viewed a little off to the side. I found this very interesting because not only can it be used for that meaning but also to a point of view where things can be read between the lines and other things can be implied like a conspiracy, it’s just a cool idea i found with the name “Averted” so it just stuck.

2.Why did you want to play this genre?

Merlin: I think that we all have our own stories and ventures towards our love and passion for what we do and why we love playing the music we play. Ultimately, it is something we all feel we can express ourselves verbally and musically to our fullest extent. We all also enjoy listening to the style of music we play and have a good time writing and performing it too.

Syhem: For me, pop-punk was the gateway into heavier music and I joined my first metal band when I was 15, my favourite bands at the time (I still love them) were Slipknot and Children of Bodom so I fell in love hard with progressive metal/metalcore when I first came across it a few years later.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Merlin: No, Initially the band was originated from the early demos written between the guitarist (Jamie) and the drummer (Merlin), who both met online on a band joining website. Between the two, deciding to pursue more members the act, bassist (Logan) was a good friend of the guitarists and took part in the project. Then we found a vocalist (Syhem) from posting online advertisements near the band’s fruition.

4. Each band member favourite band?

Syhem: It’s a hard one because I listen to a lot of bands, but I love Veil Of Maya, Meshuggah, and Periphery. I’ve made a playlist with some of my favourite tunes here:

Logan: I’ve made a playlist too here:

Merlin: It changes for me all the time, but I cannot deny my love towards, System of A Down and Slipknot

Jamie: Avenged Sevenfold, Killswitch Engage and Motley Crue.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Merlin: The songs instrumental structure being heavy composed between guitarist (Jamie) and drummer (Merlin). Lyrics being solely composed by Vocalist (Syhem) we all have our own inspirations to composing our own parts for the songs.

Syhem: I feel like there is so much to talk about that it was actually a little bit hard for me to pinpoint a theme for the EP at first! I tend to find inspiration from any event or situation that affects me emotionally whether it’s the news of a horrendous war or a personal thing happening. There are so many things going wrong in this world which means that sadly I will never run out of themes. Having said that, I’m trying to explore the other (better) side of the human spectrum in our upcoming album so stay tuned.

6. Where was your last gig?

Merlin: WE HAVE NOT GIGGED YET! Releasing our own debut EP in the midst of COVID-19 was probably one of the worst times to start a band, all gigs we had lined up were cancelled till further notice. We hope to get something started in the year 2021 once things have calmed down.

7. Where would you like to act?

Syhem: Wherever people want to see us! We’re down to go anywhere, but if I could pick I’d love to go and say hello to my friends in my home country: France!

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

Merlin: As a group, it would be a privilege to feature with any artist within the scene but I think a feature with some mad guitarist shredder would be lit or vocal collab would be mad.

Syhem: There’s definitely a few people I have in mind but you’ll have to keep an eye on our page to find out...

9. Whom not?

Merlin: any member from Trapt or Anal Cunt.

Syhem: He said it.

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to eat that?

Merlin: Every time you get up on stage in front of 10s, 100s, 1000s or even like 3 people, you will get the sweats and that nervous feeling in your tummy. Best solution is to be prepared and ready and nothing will beat you down if you give the best performance you can! It will show to everyone watching and after a couple of songs you will be having a blast.

Syhem: I am definitely the worst for that and that means a lot of prep to help and get in the zone, as a vocalist I try and save my voice during the day anyway so I spend a lot of my time meditating alone (as much as I can be) or I play video games to keep my mind occupied with something else. A couple of hours before the show I start warming up my voice and body, stretch and really focus all my attention on being physically ready for my performance, and once I feel ready it’s generally show time!

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Merlin: There are a few bands that we all love and gain some inspiration from like Plini, Periphery, Veil of Maya as well as many others.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

Syhem: I’ve had some weird requests in my time… But also I’m not here to shame people, we’re all a weirdo to someone.

13. What do you think of your fans?

Merlin: They are great, massively supportive and always interact with us online, commenting and liking everything we post and only want the best of us.

Syhem: I admin most of our pages and had the chance to have amazing interactions with some sick people who are following us and it’s honestly so nice! Without being too cheesy and stuff, we’re super grateful for anyone who has been supporting us so far.

14. What do you think of our site?

Syhem: Really cool thank you again for the opportunity, you guys are awesome! http://www.breathingthecore.com/
