Interviews: Songs Of Petrichor

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Progressive Grunge Rock band, Songs Of Petrichor from Saudi Arabia. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1.Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

Interestingly, the band name was a driving force for the band to push forward. Petrichor gorgeously means ‘the smell of rain’. Songs Of Petrichor’s purpose is, as the name implies, to take you through a journey of rain-induced nostalgia, memories, strong emotions, relish and melancholy. While taking influence from a diverse and broad set of genres, SOP manages to find its own voice and build its unique but relatable sound.

2.Why did you want to play this genre?

We didn’t plan the genre first, the lyrical content and theme of the song came first. The genre was relevant and appropriate for the energy required.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

When Shaharyar and I met we had a craving to work with like-minded individuals and create something meaningful since we realized there is a gap in the music scene that we want to fill. Since we first met (interesting story) we had many spontaneous improvisational jams and a natural flow of ideas. However, we were complete only when we snatched Yousef from another band, whom we had our eyes on for a while. Even though we had multiple song concepts of various genres from oriental grunge, hard rock and jazz to world music, the idea came to be once I came across a word on an online dictionary ‘Petrichor’. It simply means the smell of rain. What we personally experience from the smell of rain is dominantly nostalgia. Consequently, we agreed on the idea to write music that only taps certain emotions.

4. Each band member favourite band?

Shaharyar Hamdani (Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple) Yousef Masood (Metallica, Alice in Chains, Tool), Omair Soomro (Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, Tool, Sabbath)

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

The songwriting process is a collaborative effort in which the lyrics and the music are cross-influential. For sure it always starts with a real-life story. Quite often the lyrics come first and the music is developed around it. Other times the melody comes first and lyrics and musicality are developed around it. Often the melodies unfold during improvisational jams. Additionally, with the members in the band all being multi-instrumentalists, songwriting is always a lot of fun as perspectives are mutual on all instruments.
