Interviews: Abysskvlt

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Funeral Doom Metal band, Abysskvlt from Russia. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1.Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

We started thinking about the band name as soon as we started writing songs for the first album. As far as the theme of the album concerned the themes of the inner and outer space of man, the name of the cult of the Abyss seemed the most appropriate. The Abyss here is the closest metophor for the inner boundless emptiness. The word kvlt comes from our black metal past life as several of the band members were previously involved in black metal bands, and this is a kind of tribute to this genre of metal.

2.Why did you want to play this genre?

We've probably already done all the other metal genres and wanted something new. Since we all love funeral doom metal, we focused on that. Later we added Tibetan music and it turned out to be something new for us. We can add that we ourselves are fans of funeral doom and we always wanted to hear something new within this genre. Something that has never happened before.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

No, we didn't know each other. We met exclusively to form a band. But now, after a while, we are really on good friends.

4. Each band member favourite band?

Perhaps it is - Colosseum, Ophis, KYPCK, Lifelover and Esoteric. We also like a lot of non-metal music, very different genres. It can be folk songs of the peoples of Siberia, brutal noise-grind and many other things.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

In order to create our music, we try to disconnect as much as possible from all external things, we immerse ourselves in ourselves as much as possible. Inspiration then arises, at the very bottom of this black well. We do not do anything on purpose, no rituals and other things, we just plunge in silence and contemplate the inner silence, from the images of which ideas for songs come. We also try not to stick to any rules. Let everything happen as it happens.

6. Where was your last gig?

Our last gig was in Moscow, February 2, 2020, on the eve of Imbolc.

7. Where would you like to act?

Usually, we do not care where and when to perform. But if we received an invitation from good organizers and there are interesting bands in the line-up, then we are definitely in.

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

We would like to feature with any experienced bands who have a lot to learn in musical technique. It would be enough for us to just cooperate with everyone who is on the wave and shares our passion for funeral doom.

9. Whom not?

It would be very difficult and uncomfortable for us to work with those who live by completely different concepts, think a lot about commercial success. If for you music is only a means of earning money, then we will go different ways.

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

No, none of us have ever had any fear or anxiety about live performances. Perhaps this is because we did not have a hot desire to play on stage. This is a part of our musical life, but not the most important one. I'm afraid we have so much live experience to give advice. if this is your aspiration - take it and that's all.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

If we are talking specifically about inspiration, then there are no such bands, because we did not look for inspiration in the music of other bands. It is worth saying that we studied the experience of other bands, such as Phurpa, Ego Depths, Khyung Nagpo, whose music is associated with Tibet, in order to learn how to play in all the variety of instruments and musical features.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

We didn't talk to the fans that often. Usually these are all our acquaintances or friends. Therefore, for us, even asking for the simplest sign on the album cover is already a weirdest thing.

13. What do you think of your fans?

We think they are very strange people, but with great musical taste)

14. What do you think of our site?

You have a great website and webzine. This is a real find for those who listen to metal and are looking for something new.

15. Something to add?

All the answers are within yourself. Close your eyes and see.
