Interviews: JOY/DISASTER

We have had the opportunity to interview the Alternative Rock/Post-Punk band JOY/DISASTER from France. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1.Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

The band of the name just came after few ideas to resume in two words, life and our feelings with bands we had before. The backslash between the two words appeared in 2009 because we thought it necessary to separate the two words and to look them better as a logo.

2.Why did you want to play this genre?

This genre as you said is really rich in many genres that we like and the band constantly evolved with the influences of all musicians who have played since the last sixteen years. We've started to play post-punk because our influences were familiar with this sound at this moment. I think the promoters and fans influenced us to stay to this way until 2009 and it was necessary for us to create something new. Of course, we always can hear or feel something like a fabric mark in our actual sound, especially with melodies. For my personal advice, I think we are a band comparable with The Cure even if I'm won't ever pretending to be big as them, but like them, our sound progress and evolute with the time.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

The story of musicians of JOY/DISASTER is really long to explore and explain but for each actual members, we were friends before to play together in the same band.

4. Each band member's favorite band?

Nico (vox & guitar): Pg.Lost

Simon (guitar): Yob

Soupa (backing & bass): Pearl Jam

Seb (Drums): Smashing Pumpkins

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Who? People in general, just regarding people give you a lot of subjects to start to write... What? Everything around us from earth to universe. We don't have any special favorite subjects, everything's depending on what we are living at the moment I am writing the lyrics.

6. Where was your last gig?

Our last gigs was the March 14th of 2020, the last night before the french confinement. The show was in France in a small city close from where we are living. A lot friends, family and people came to make a last party before to go home for few weeks... It was a very special atmosphere anyway, but a wonderful memory for us.

7. Where would you like to act?

At the moment we really want to act in the UK because we played there the last time in 2008 and it's definitely too far for us. The UK is the center of punk, new wave, rock music and Every time we've played there we felt the atmosphere we liked when we watched videos of gigs when we were teenagers. But before all, we would love to play everywhere that we can because we love to play in front of people before all.

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

The list is too long but 1919, Whipping Boy, The Horros, Idelwild, Editors, Smashing Pumpkins, The Cure and Liam Gallagher for fun.

9. Whom not?

Noël Gallagher of course.

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

I think we all have our kind of fright before the stage, the fright to be bad or to have an unreceptive crowd in front of us... It could happen as well but the most important for beginners and old bands like us is to have and take pleasure on stage because when you have the pleasure to do what you love, you share it to people around you.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

The Cure, Bauhaus, Depeche Mode, Stereophonics, R.E.M, Midnight Oil, The Outfield, Guns'n Roses, Skid Row and so many more...

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

It was about one of our old bass players who were totally drunk on stage in Poland and one guy from the crowd came on stage to smash him and said "You play like a dicked"!

13. What do you think of your fans?

Our fans are very friendly because we are friendly guys, we love to talk with them about our music and about life in general and drink some beers...

14. What do you think of our site?

Your site is really clear, good appearance and all the information is easy to find, for a webzine it's very important and I want to congratulate you guys on this wonderful job !

15. Something to add?

Hope to have the pleasure to meet you all for a show and welcome people who will write this interview and are interested or not with JOY/DISASTER. See and meet you as soon as possible... Take care and thanks a lot for your question with hope the replies will be ok for you... Kind Regards. Nico
