Interviews: Icantdie

We have had the opportunity to interview the Post-Hardcore band Icantdie from the UK. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or come out just like that?

Kyle: When I had left a previous band I spent ages in my then bedroom working on demos and wanted to think of a really good name for it. Then I came across a Reading Festival lineup and saw some of the small bands listed on the other stage and was amazed about how id never heard of these acts yet they had star-out band names. Like really abnormal ones. So I thought with this project and the creepy sound it has maybe it should have a crazy name that stood out too. The music I was writing was fun so I wanted to match that. In the end, I was watching an episode of South Park and I heard the character Kenny say the words “I Cant Die” and thought that was it, but those words together as one word and that’s the name! Icantdie! Just thought it was a fun, standout name that people would notice in a sea of other band names. I think it's worked so far haha.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

Kyle: Doing a trio band was always on the cards. I am a big fan of huge sounds through simple means and trio bands such as Biffy, Muse, Press to meco, Inme (when they were a trio) do that effortlessly. Heavy yet melodic has always been my style of music but I wanted to push this and see how crazy we could go with it. It was a challenge to my songwriting and a lot of fun too.

Adam: For me, I have grown up around this scene of music and when I heard what Kyle was doing it really stood out to me as something different, exciting, and musically challenging.

Sam: I grew up listening to the likes of Metallica, Type O Negative and Early Nirvana.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Sam: I had heard of Kyle as he was in that big band Roman Nose or something….I can't really remember. Nah I’m only messing I didn’t know either of these pair of clowns haha. Bet they are gutted they met me though.

Kyle: Roman nose?! Hahahaha. Cheers Sam, We were actually called Caesars Rome. But yeah I've known Adam for a while playing in different bands but Sam was a friend of many friends of mine at the start. He was recommended to me by a mate when we needed a bassist and it's been a great fit ever since.

Adam: I knew kyle from many moons ago playing in different bands and crossing paths in venues like hobos in Bridgend. My band would have played with his band at the time but I didn't know Sam.

4. Each band member favourite band?

Adam: At the moment ETID, Biffy, Frank Carter..

Sam: Type O Negative

Kyle: Muse, Reuben, Billy Talent, ETID, Dillinger Escape Plan, Thrice

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Kyle: Tough one, I suppose listening to bands live and the record does. If something makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up I analyze the hell out of it. What makes it tick, why I like it so much, and try to incorporate it into my playing. I suppose any musician does that but for me, it's not that I want to copy what they are doing, it's that Id likes to capture that same energy. I could hear the heaviest riff ever and for some reason want to write a ballad. It's a strange feeling but it gets me writing and I don’t question it. 6. Where was your last gig?

Sam: In a skatepark just outside Butlins mine head. We had all the red coats there nodding away to our songs I was in pure heaven. They were like what a terrific little bassist let’s get him in!

Kyle: I think we'll leave it to you to decide which part of that story isn’t True hahahah

7. Where would you like to play?

Kyle: I've got a list, and I think it's an eventuality we'll play them all one day. But fest-wise? That's the dream bills to be on 2000 trees, Bloodstock I think we’d be good there, Download Obviously, Camden Rocks Fest, that’ll be different.

Adam: Locally Cardiff uni or clwb ifor main stage.. Then further afield bigger London venues and up north like Leeds and Sheffield have great scenes. Also festival circuit.

Sam: On a cruise liner just outside Monte Carlo surrounded by women

8. Who would you like to support?

Adam: ETID…!

Kyle: Yeah ETID for sure, We’ve supported some great bands already So I suppose anyone who's willing to take us on tour really.

9. Who not?

Kyle: Can't really think of anyone we’d steer clear of. Would have to be a pretty good reason.

Sam: Seether

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

Sam: Only on the Halloween show we played. We dressed up for that gig

Adam: I get nervous if I haven't gigged for a while or we make a big change to the set. My tip would be not to just mask it by getting drunk but to just think about the last band prac you had where you played it through with no problem and as soon as you get into that first song you'll be loving it.

Kyle: I'm a perfectionist with live performances, so stage fright is mostly triggered by that. But it's not keeping me off the stage. Totally agree with Adam about getting drunk on stage, I don’t do that. Occasionally ill have one drink but don’t get sloshed, wins you no favours

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Kyle: Any band that I’ve seen live, it inspires me to do more.

Adam: As above favorite bands plus bands like a funeral for a friend, foo fighters, Jimmy eat World..

Sam: Me personally …the cure, type o negative and Metallica.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

Sam: Bro can I borrow your tone! It f***ing rocks!

Kyle: Anything that a “fan” asks of us we find weird I guess. A photo, an autograph, a hug. Yeah, a Hug was the weirdest.

13. What do you think of your fans?

Kyle: They are slowly growing lol. We love that people enjoy what we're doing. We find this band fun and the fact that people want to join in just keeps us going.

14. What do you think of our site?

Kyle: Great Site! Been checking out a lot of the bands you’ve featured. Loved The Moor Interview

15. Something to add?

Kyle: Our Live Compilation music video for our Single “Counter” Featuring Sean Smith (The Blackout/Raiders) goes live on Nov 26th! Play, Stream, subscribe, and follow and come say hi to us at a gig!
