Interviews: FUMAROLE

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Doom Metal/Stoner Metal band, FUMAROLE, from Australia. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1.Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

It took us a while to come up with a band name. We wanted something earthy but powerful and every time we thought we had one it was taken. Then one day Dan showed us what a Fumarole was and we thought an opening in a planet's crust which emits steam and gases fit just right. Also it comes from the latin word 'fumus' which means smoke and if that doesn't fit a stoner rock/metal band I don't know what does.

2.Why did you want to play this genre?

We like riffs, we like heavy and we like being able to play what we want. We needed something that can be metal and be psychedelic, a music that can be catchy but at the same time we want to be freeform and the collective of genres in the stoner/doom/psych world afforded us that freedom. We're not trying to fit in, it just kinda happens and that's why Fumarole is always going to be catchy but a little different.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Dan and I (Kurt) Worked together and would always have music chats around the water cooler or out on breaks. Ryan we met on a facebook group looking for musicians and as soon as we jammed we knew it was a fit. Funny story about that first Jam, Dan was a bit worried we'd get locked in a basement never to return so he packed a shiv just in case we needed to fight our way out. lol

4. Each band member favourite band?

Dans is King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, he has an amazing collection of their label (flightless) stuff. Absolutely huge collection, Ryan's Metallica and Anthrax and mine I am pretty much obsessed with Every Time I Die and The Sword.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

A good album will always inspire something. most recently it was the new Dopelord album. A good sci-fi will do it sometimes books, shows, movies they're all good. Oh and a really good live show, even recorded like Chinky Shrapnel was awesome. Our songs are stories but they're definitely based in reality. For Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes we took real life actions of people in history and put them in a Sci-fi setting. Perfect example is the greedy Remote Controllers are based on that 1% of the population controlling the worlds wealth and we're slaving away.

6. Where was your last gig?

The last gig was at a really cool art space venue in ipswich Australia called Banshees Bar and Artspace. Very cool place and they recorded our set! love it there!

7. Where would you like to act?

We would love to play Sydney and Melbourne. We had a tour booked in for june/july but COVID killed that. We're itching to get down there.

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

Orange goblin hands down. I think they would be so much fun. Them or Corrosion of Cpnformity! both LORDS OF THE RIFF!!

9. Whom not?

Any racist or bigotted bands, fuck that noise! we're definitely not about that vibe, we want everyone to have fun at our shows, we're all weirdos so why not get along and have a good time with ya brothers and sisters?

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

I do all the time! I always have pre show nerves the night before and the whole day of the show. I have a 2 way approach to get through it, 1. I am over practiced, leading up to the show I will play the set everyday but i'm not singing at full volume because otherwise I will blow out my voice. 2. I get aggressive, I listen to hype music like back from the abyss from Orange Goblin and I put on a bandana and put my mean face on when I hit the stage.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

King Gizzard, Orange Goblin, The Sword, Earthless, Metallica and ETID

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

A CD signed by us and my wife, She was there with us at the time but it still seems a bit weird.

13. What do you think of your fans?

Probably the best humans out there! We want to get out into the world more and meet more of them. We have made some awesome friends thanks to them having a chat with us after a show or online. Fumarole fans rule!!

14. What do you think of our site?

It's really cool! I like that you cover so many genres! I am a huge fan of heavy music and not just the genres we play, I think that's important because why pigeonhole yourself when there's so much cool stuff out there. also I see you have a compilation raising funds for aussie fires. That speaks to me, we have crazy weather here especially where I live in Queensland and it's nice to see the world cares.

15. Something add?

Thank so much for this! anyone reading this check out the Aussie music scene. We have some world class acts and it's only getting better. spread the word, share your friends' cool shit and let's make this world awesome!
