Interviews: Maudiir

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Thrash Metal/Black Metal band, Maudiir from Canada. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1.Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

I was looking for a band name, so my brother got together with a few friends around a couple of beers and they came up with it. The name is derived from the French word “Maudire”, which means “To curse”. We were looking for something to reflect my French Québécois heritage, even if all the lyrics are in English.

2.Why did you want to play this genre?

I find black metal to be interesting as I think it might be the last metal genre where everybody does what they want, with their own sound, without really caring for the “standard” metal sound that is tweaked to perfection with editing and pitch correction, which I’m really getting tired of.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Maudiir is a one-man project.

4. Each band member favourite band?

My favourite bands are Iron Maiden and Rush.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Generally, I’m inspired by what is going on in the world; politics, religion, consumer society, environment. For “La Part du Diable”, reactions from people to the health crisis, the political situation in the US and all the crazy conspiracy theories inspired a lot of the lyrics.

6. Where was your last gig?

As of now, there is no plan to play live with Maudiir.

7. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

I do play live with an Iron Maiden tribute band called Made In Iron, and have been doing so for years. We play big stages in front of a lot of people, and the songs are very well known, so there’s a lot of pressure to play well, and nail the solos note for note. I find that having a beer (not too many) before the show smooth things out, and always try to remember that the main pressure lies on the singer (haha!).

8. What bands have inspired you the most?

I’m mostly influenced by Classic 80’s metal. I also love the 90’s European metal scene; Amorphis, Memento Mori. On the black metal side, I really like Obsequiae. Their last 2 albums are phenomenal. I love the first Emperor album, a lot of albums from Mayhem, pretty much everything Satyricon has done, Taake...

9. What do you think of your fans?

I think they are open minded people looking for something different.

10. What do you think of our site?

It looks really professional and seems to be a great outlet for unsigned bands, which is greatly needed and appreciated.

11. Something add?

Thank you very much for your interest in me and Maudiir, it is very much appreciated. If you like the band, feel free to download the EP from the Bandcamp and spread the word.
