Interviews: SECRET IRIS

This is a new interview with the Rock band SECRET IRIS from the USA. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you plan it or came out just like that?

A little of both. It was important to find a name that wasn't taken, so that was honestly the most influential factor. We like it because it's somewhat ambiguous. Easy to find meaning in, if you're the type that wants to look for that, but also easy to just not think about at all.

2.Why did you want to play this genre?

Who knows what genre we are? It's just the music that comes out. That may sound hokey, or like it's some kind of cool guy line, but we're not really thinking in terms of genre when we write. I think most people would probably call us rock, so let's go with that. The genre that includes everyone from Chuck Berry to Charles Bronson.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Jeffrey: I’ve known both Tanner and Matt for years. We’ve played shows together and seen each other’s various bands throughout the years. I’ve always been impressed with both Tanner and Matt’s talents, so it’s really been an honor that they’ve put up with me through all of this.

Tanner: I’ve known Jeff for years. We are buds! When he told me he was starting this project one night I immediately asked to play bass without even hearing anything he had been working on! As for Matt I hadn’t had the pleasure of meeting him until just before we started working on the songs to prep for recording. He is a real sweet guy.

4. Each band member's favorite band?

Jeffrey: These days, it’s Propagandhi.

Tanner: Neurosis.

Matt: HTRK is my favorite band right now.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Love, grief, money, power, drugs and lies are all a strong influence on the band. There’s a potential for honest communication here, that doesn’t seem to exist in most other places in life. Opinions are like assholes, no one wants to hear yours unless you’re in a band. Or is it especially if you’re in a band?

6. Where was your last gig?

Secret Iris started as a studio project, so there was never a plan to play live. (Not to mention the fact that we’re releasing our debut during a global pandemic.) That said, we did get asked by some friends to open their show in October 2021 at Rebel Lounge in Phoenix, so that was our first and only show to date. We’ll surely end up playing more.

7. Where would you like to act?

Anywhere, really! Some beloved towns around the US are Denver, Colorado, Portland, Oregon, Austin, Texas, Columbus, Ohio, and Richmond, Virginia, to name a few. An underground show in Derry, Maine is the dream. Either that or Castle Rock

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

Kind of the same as above. Anyone, really, from The Go-Go’s to Neurosis. Iron Maiden would be fun to watch every night. Imagine doing a tour with John Carpenter. That would be incredible.

9. Whom not?

A band would have to be some Grade-A Douchebags for us to specifically want to not play with them. So…Kid Rock? But we can all agree that he was right to laugh about Tucker’s Testicular Tanning.

10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

Stage Fright, a great movie. Old Italian horror is about as good as it gets. As far as beating stage fright, the only way to get more comfortable doing something is to keep doing it!

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Nirvana, Type O Negative, Bauhaus, Pink Floyd. This list could realistically be 2 dozen bands long, but those four have a tendency to stick out a little more in our music.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

Half of our burrito.

13. What do you think of your fans?

Since we’re just getting started, we don’t really have many, but we appreciate all present and future fans!

14. What do you think of our site?

We found out about the site through this interview and it seems cool! It’s nice to see someone promoting new bands such as ourselves.

15. Something to add?

Our debut 7” vinyl is coming out soon on Crisis Tree Records, so keep an eye out! Thanks for taking the time to interview us.
