Interviews: THE RUNNING FREE

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Alternative Rock band, THE RUNNING FREE from the UK. Check out the interview and follow the band on their INSTAGRAM PROFILE

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

The name is the title of a song from 2 of my favourite bands. Iron Maiden and Coheed & Cambria. Especially with Coheed, it was the song that got me into the band!

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

It wasn’t so much a conscious choice as it was the style that came out when I sat down to write music, which is a bit odd as I am quite the metalhead! I think what I wanted to say in my lyrics, it works much better with indie/alt-rock style.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Yes, obviously I’ve known my brother a while, Thom and Rory I met through a function band that we are both in to earn some money on the side. We have all spent so much time playing together so it felt like a natural move.

4. Each band member's favourite band?

Dave - Coheed & Cambria

Chris – Iron Maiden

Rory – Enter Shikari

Thom – Merzbow.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Usually, it’s an experience or a particular emotion or reaction to events or interactions I have. It really depends, and sometimes I don't really know what it is about until I’ve written the song. It’s almost a stream of consciousness and I’m picking words and phrases that resonate with me.

6. Where was your last gig?

Our last gig was at The Key Club in Leeds with Slam Dunk presents; it was awesome! We have really wanted to play there since we started performing live

7. Where would you like to play?

Wembley Arena would be something, right? I have always wanted to do an O2 Academy, in the main room, for me that would be a huge achievement, I've seen so many of my favourite bands at O2 Academy in Leeds and Manchester.

8. Who would you like to support?

Coheed & Cambria of course!! Though I'm not sure we would be the best support for them. I think Deaf Havana or someone like that would be the best fit.

9. Who not?

I can’t even think of one! There are bands I don't like, but I can’t find one where I would hate to support them. Though I would love to do it, I would hate to support Iron Maiden, I've seen loads of bands that I love supporting them. It just doesn’t sit right for some reason.

10. Have any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

Not stage fright, obviously when we started, we would be extremely nervous at the first few gigs. The best advice I ever got about performing is to understand the audience is on your side. They don’t want to see people fail, and even if they did, they would support you. And if they make fun of you, they are an awful human.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Foo Fighters, Biffy Clyro definitely inspired the style of music the most and the overall style and sound I was going for. It all started with Green Day, especially the Bullet in a Bible live DVD. That absolutely blew my mind as a kid, and I just wanted to be like Billy Joe. Him, and Dave Grohl!

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

Someone asked at a show if we could play some Beyonce. I was blown away. I said down the mic “You see the instruments, right? You heard the songs we were playing before you said that??”

13. What do you think of your fans?

Well, for this release, patient! It's been a long time. Our fans tend to be a bit quieter and shyer, they are always really pleasant to interact with. No crazies yet, but they are welcome of course.

14. What do you think of our site?

It’s awesome! You have so many bands, you keep it really up to date. I honestly don't know how you keep on top of it all!

15. Something to add?

Thanks for having us it is massively appreciated. And thank you for the people who have taken the time to check us out and give us a listen! We hope you like what you heard. Take care of yourselves, and take care of those close to you. Peace. www.facebook.com/therunningfree
