Interviews: Hooker Spit

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Death Metal band, Hooker Spit from Canada. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

Vlad: The name is Hooker Spit came to be by our reaction to the first rough draft of our artwork that Daniel whipped up before we sent it out to our long-time artist friend PaleaRaptor.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

Vlad: Metal has always struck me as some of the best-composed music out there. Lots of twists and turns or in some cases you just get strapped to a rocket n’ go. For me, it’s always been the guitar solos and breakdowns in the musical sense. The people are also really amazing in the scene from my experience.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Vlad: Hooker Spit was formed by myself and Daniel in 2018 however we didn’t establish ourselves until 2021. We both met Devin at our local venue in town called The Vat during a show. Showed him our demos and he hopped on board. Daniel and Scott’s sister have been really great friends since high school so Daniel has known him for a long time. We actually scouted him out for a few years and eventually, one of his bands broke up so we scooped him up before anyone else did hahaha. From there Scott introduced us to Jose after a few months, we all vibed great together so he joined us which is practically the abridged version of how we all got together.

4. Each band member's favorite band?

Vlad: Children of Bodom

Dan: TOOL

Devin: Betraying The Martyrs

Scott: The Black Dahlia Murder

Jose: Iron Maiden

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Dan: Honestly, it’s hard to nail down a concise list of inspirations as I believe that we draw from a lot of different genres and subgenres when approaching songwriting. Lyrically, the themes are just as varied. To say the totality of human experience sounds pretentious but I don’t really know how else to describe it.

6. Where was your last gig?

At the time of writing this, we just wrapped up supporting Plaguebringer on their stop in Red Deer alongside Art of Attrition which is our last show before we start our Western Canadian Tour supporting our debut album Krötch Splitter.

7. Where would you like to act?

Dan: Wacken without a doubt. We all hope to someday make the trek to Germany and play Wacken Open Air. That would be a dream come true for all of us.

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

Vlad: If we had our pick, I would love to have Ryan Knight from The Black Dahlia Murder lay down a solo on one of our tracks. That dude seriously has some tasty licks!

9. Whom not?

Vlad: Trick question! If it doesn’t fit the vibe then we won’t work with them.

10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

Devin: From time to time I suffer from stage fright. It all really depends on the crowd. If they are standoffish or they are ready to hop into it. My advice would be just to be yourself on stage and do your best. Not every show is going perfect but make the best of it, your energy is going to project onto the crowd.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Vlad: Definitely the Gothenburg scene! Bands like Bloodbath, At The Gates, and Early In Flames had a huge impact on what kind of music I wanted to write myself. Some of that early stuff sounded like it was written with a Metal Zone distortion pedal but it sounded so great and chunky. Still some of my favorite bands to date.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

Devin: Yeah! A guy with a lit cigarette stuck in his ear, in the smoke pit, asked for an autograph on his bicycle.

13. What do you think of your fans?

Devin: They have been super supportive. We appreciate them all! We honestly wouldn't be where we are today without them.

14. What do you think of our site?

Devin: Too bright. Where is the dark mode? Haha! Your site looks like a great spot to help upcoming bands get heard and also direct people to acquire their music.

15. Something to add?

Scott: Yeah, just a few things. The Moon isn’t real. The Earth is Flat. Ketchup belongs on steak and mustard belongs on hashbrowns. Barbecue sauce is just fancy ketchup. A hotdog is a sandwich. God put dinosaur bones in the ground to test our faith.
