Interviews: Spreadloves

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Hardcore/Beatdown/Metal band Spreadloves from the USA. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, did you plan it or come out just like that?

The band name was something we didn’t think too hard about. Our drummer was spitballing band names, and Spreadloves happened to be a positive message we all liked, a palindrome significant to the drummer, and a bit of a crude joke for us to lean into on stage all wrapped into one.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

We all find common musical ground in metal. It’s what we were raised on, what shaped us. It’s a mother tongue to us. Sometimes in practice, we won’t say a word, but someone will play a riff, and we all know exactly what it means. It’s kinda silly, but it’s absolutely part of our communication. We do a fair bit of genre-bending/ melding within our catalog, and while we explore all sorts of different things, we always come back to metal.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Some of us did. Wes, Andrew, and Evan were in a project formed on Craigslist that didn’t go too far before forming Spreadloves, and Ryland, Richie, and Evan had played together in a band in college called State of Uncertainty, and that fizzled out due to everyone graduating right as spreadloves began to pick up steam.

4. Each band member's favorite band?

Oh geez, this is hard. True favorites probably don’t exist, but we’ll say:

Richie: Metallica

Andrew: Pantera

Evan: Microwave or Peach Pit

Wes: Tool Cal: Evildead Ryland: Every Time I Die

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

We are inspired primarily by the music we listen to and love. We like writing music that is fun for us and our fans.

6. Where was your last gig?

We played Oddville at the Fruit Produce Co. In Durham on December 9! It was an absolute blast. Oddville is a wonderful festival of delightfully strange folk and art, and it was so fun to be a part of that.

7. Where would you like to act?

We dream of playing Red Rocks in Colorado. That amphitheater is legendary. It would also be amazing to play the main room at Cats Cradle. Several of our bandmates went to UNC Chapel Hill, and that place is a local legend.

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

Turnstile or System of A Down would be awesome. Those bands mean a lot to us and we’d love to play a show with them.

9. Whom not?

Honestly, I’d play with any of the musicians I really admire. We have a grand old time on stage and could get along with most anyone, but I feel like our fans couldn’t get behind us playing with someone too stylistically distant.

10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?

Stage fright is something we definitely still suffer from, but it is greatly reduced by preparation and practice. Keeping things simple is also best.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Deftones, Rage Against the Machine, and System of A Down, probably. We love these guys and listen to them regularly.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

… 🍆

13. What do you think of your fans?

They fuckin rock! Our home team crew is amazing and they come out for every show. We have some excellent regular attendees, and we’re happy they enjoy what we do.

14. What do you think of our site?

It’s super dope man! Glad there’s a central place to discover up-and-coming metal artists.
