Interviews: Brutalism
On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Brutal Death Metal/Technical Death Metal band Brutalism from the USA. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, did you plan it or came out just like that?
The name Brutalism is actually a super on the nose pun of sorts. I was reading an article about architecture. I saw the word, looked up the meaning, and it basically means "purposefully crude or violent art or architecture" which is basically just Death Metal. I immediately thought that HAS to be a band already, and after extensive searching I found nothing and went with it.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
I got into Death Metal through Morbid Angel. As soon as I heard them I was like "I want to do that" then as you grow older and things progress, your tastes will change, like I started listening to Deeds Of Flesh and Severe Torture and got that same type of stoked I felt when hearing Morbid Angel the first time. It just really scratches that itch you know.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
Cam and I went to middle school together but weren't super close back then we just kind of knew each other. I didn't meet the rest of the guys until Dante hit me up when I was looking for members for Brutalism, London and Ian were also interested. We became fast friends and it just worked. They had history jamming together in Barn, and the whole thing fell into place really perfectly.
4. Each band member's favorite band?
Definitely Rush, Queen, Malignancy & Disgorge for me. Ian's are Ingrown, Peeling Flesh, and System of a Down. Dante & London’s are Tool, Defeated Sanity, Dying Fetus, Cynic & Nile. Cam’s are Dying Fetus, Devourment, Cephalotripsy & Guttural Slug.
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
Honestly, it's just something I feel like I have to do. It's not that I just want to or like to, I just don't feel right if I don't. I think all the guys would agree. We've talked about it a few times, haha!
6. Where was your last gig?
Our last gig was at a "rave" at the Treefort Music Hall. It was half metal bands and half EDM bands.
7. Where would you like to act?
Honestly, we just love playing man. We try to play all the shows we can make. We're not picky, but it's always cool getting asked to play out of state on festivals and stuff of the sort.
8. Whom would you like to feature with?
We tossed around the idea of featuring a few people on our album. It'd be really rad to have any of our heroes be in on some stuff we write. We always love going to the other sick locals in our area more than anything though. Gotta represent your town.
9. Whom not?
I plead the 5th, hahaha!
10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?
Keep your head down and keep shooting!
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
Personally, the bands that have inspired me the most lately are the homies in Regurgitated Entrails, Nuclear Remains and Texas Ketamine. They just keep doing sick stuff and gaining a bunch of headway and it always makes me want to go as ape shit as I can.
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
I haven’t had any strange requests in that regard if I'm being honest. So instead, I'll say the coolest thing I've been asked, is a super young kid asking for my guitar pick. I thought that was rad.
13. What do you think of your fans?
Our fans are the best fans, especially in Boise. They always go super hard for us when we play out. Definitely makes it a fun experience.
14. What do you think of our site?
I think it's sick man! It's also super sick to be featured on here! Strange but super cool feeling!
15. Something to add?
Honestly man, we just can't thank everyone who supports us enough. You guys have no idea how much it means to all of us, and it definitely makes the struggle worth it in more ways than one. We got love for you all!
