Interviews: Deus Ex Machina

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Melodic Death Metal/Thrash Metal band Deus Ex Machina from Singapore. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you plan it or come out just like that?

It was never planned to be honest. We were toying with some names and our former drummer Gene came up with it. I thought it felt great with the direction I had in mind

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

I guess it was kind of natural to me. I've listened to metal most of my life and started playing in hard rock bands, cover bands, and such. I was asked to join the now-defunct Azra-el, which played death metal. I've never turned back since.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Vivek and I have known each other for many years. He was the singer for Azra-el. Herman, the other guitarist we've known from the local music scene. Jussi, our bass player was introduced by a mutual friend. Neil on Drums was in turn introduced via Jussi.

4. Each band member's favorite band?

Death seems to be a common one for us. Collectively we like Morbid Angel, Insomnium, In Flames, and more.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

For me, it could be anything from books to what's on in the news and just conversations. I tend to have ideas in my head, record some riffs, and head to the studio with boys to complete the rest. But inspiration for all of us comes from many places

6. Where was your last gig?

Singapore. Metal United World Wide.

7. Where would you like to act?

Anywhere to be honest. We've gigged in Australia and South East Asia. Europe would be great

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

Too many bands. Death was one, maybe Amon Amarth, Dark Tranquility, and such. Similar styles.

9. Whom not?

Nazi bands.

10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?

I still have stage fright. There are times I try to anticipate what could go wrong and it does my head in. Once the first song is done, I'm good to go! But there you go. Don't get into your own head, and don't be afraid to screw up. It happens. Go with the flow and you will come good.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Black Sabbath, Death, Evergrey, Nevermore, Control Denied, Carcass, Slayer, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Martyr.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

My cables and guitar string. No joke. It was ata festival in Jogjakarta. The guy literally asked me for my cables cause he collects them from various bands apparently. Lol

13. What do you think of your fans?

They're great. Honest and really supportive.

14. What do you think of our site?

I really like the Behind the Tracks and behind the artwork articles. Really great to see what others write about and how they came out of it

15. Something to add?

Thanks for this interview and support. We're right now working on the new album for next year and our 20th Anniversary show in May. Keep an eye out on our socials for some exciting news. Till then, take care and stay heavy
