Interviews: DRAKON

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Black Metal band DRAKON from Russia. Check out the interview and follow the band on their WEBSITE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you plan it or come out just like that?

Veleyar: In 2017 when the band was in its infancy. With the then-active member Terror we had a brainstorming session about finding a name. And we settled on the name "DRAKON". It's easy and clear to perceive, it has Greek roots. Also DRAKON itself as an entity is a symbol of great and ancient power, might, wisdom, and longevity. And it is also a kind of a great protection symbol!

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

Veleyar: Performing black metal was an idea long before DRAKON. At that time in 2012-2013, I was playing in the Ural black metal band Varhorn. I gained experience for a short period adopting the spirit of this majestic and mysterious music. Although I can't really call black metal just music. It's not just music. You already know that. Music is just a form, which perfectly complements the essence of what you carry in your original idea!

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Veleyar: The current lineup that we have now was assembled from some of the members of the black metal band БѢСЪ (BES). At first, I cooperated with Demetr in writing lyrics for the band, and then I gradually attracted him to record vocals. And then we decided that it was time to leave the studio for the stage. And we put together a full live band.

4. Each band member's favorite band?

Veleyar: Watain, Dissection, Morbid Angel, Death, Blaze Of Perdition, Grey Heaven Fall. The list could go on ad infinitum. But the current list is as follows. It changes from time to time.

Demetr: King Diamond, Cradle of Filth, Dark Funeral, Bal-Sagoth, Emperor, Slayer, Kreator, Metallica, Rammstein, Therion, Cannibal Corpse, Deicide.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Veleyar: Everything works itself out, as it should. I draw inspiration from books, movies, nature, my involvement with the pagan spirit and my invisible connection with the Native Gods!

6. Where was your last gig?

Veleyar: On November 23, 2023 we performed in Moscow at Deppresivefest together with bands Мещера, Khlad, Olshanoe.

7. Where would you like to act?

Veleyar: We have a concert presentation of the new album in Moscow on March 2. It will be a big and responsible event. As it will be our first solo concert. There are no special restrictions and preferences regarding further performances. We are ready to perform all over Russia and beyond.

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

Veleyar: I would really like to be on the same stage as Svartidaudi, Blaze of Perdition, Belphegor, Imperium Dekadenz.

9. Whom not?

Veleyar: It's hard to say, I'm the least likely to ask myself that question. And for ethical reasons, I'm unlikely to answer it.

Demetr: In fact, if this question concerns festivals where there are many bands, then it absolutely does not matter who else will be there, with what positions, etc. We play our own art and for the people who like us. No one can stop us from performing simply by our presence.

10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?

Veleyar: I experience it all the time. These fears are related to "what if I forget my part in one of my songs, a string breaks on my guitar or something else". I'm still feeling shaky for the first five minutes, but then I let it go. From the tips, I would recommend putting not-too-difficult technical songs first to warm up. Any performance is an important event. That's why you also need to prepare for it properly and rehearse. And rehearse not only in the studio but also at home, so as not to rust and keep yourself in tone. Everyone has their own techniques for not "screwing up" on stage. Some people skip a little alcohol before a performance. I used to do it all the time, but my technique and accuracy suffered. Yes, fear goes away, but with it comes promiscuity and negligence. And the last two performances I've had alcohol only after we've performed.

Demetr: I have been performing on stage since I was 6 years old, I danced for many years in my youth, then I took up music and have been singing metal for over 20 years, so I forgot a long time ago if I ever had jitters.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Veleyar: I was inspired by the band Death and its leader Chuck Schuldiner. I was amazed by his music, playing technique, and compositional abilities. It was with him that my passion for the guitar really began.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

Veleyar: Let's put it this way. Not so long ago, a fan from France wrote to us in the mail with a request to give him an autographed printed photo of the band. It was surprising to me. But not to say strange, it was just the first time!)

Demetr: Just recently, a fan asked us to draw not just an autograph but a cat for her on our album.

13. What do you think of your fans?

Veleyar: Only positive things. The number of listeners and fans we have is steadily growing and it's a joy! It means that we do our job right and not in vain!

14. What do you think of our site?

Veleyar: You're doing the right thing. The creativity of bands, especially newcomers, to not get lost in the big ocean should be announced and promoted!

15. Something to add?

Veleyar: Do what you love! And love what you do!
