Interviews About Albums: Release The Titans - Odyssey (2024)

In this new interview, we sat down with the Norwegian Power Metal band Release The Titans to ask questions about their album, "Odyssey".

1. What can you say about Odyssey?

"Odyssey" is a concept album that delves into the depths of despair and the resilience of the human spirit. It follows the journey of the last human survivor in a universe ravaged by environmental degradation and war. The album's narrative explores the themes of desperation, loneliness, and the search for meaning in a hopeless situation. It's a musical odyssey that takes listeners on a journey through the cosmos, reflecting the struggles and triumphs of the human condition.

2. What is the meaning of the Odyssey name?

The name "Odyssey" refers to a long and adventurous journey, which is quite fitting for this story. It can also refer to the ancient Greek epic "The Odyssey," which describes Odysseus' ten-year-long journey. Similarly, the main character in "Odyssey" embarks on a journey of self-discovery and survival in the vastness of space. The band name "Release the Titans" is also inspired by Greek folklore. In Greek mythology, the Titans were powerful deities who preceded the Olympian gods. The Titans were eventually overthrown by the Olympians in the Titanomachy War. As a result, they were imprisoned in Tartarus.

3. Which one is the composer of the Odyssey?

As the sole composer of "Odyssey," I take pride in having done everything from writing music and lyrics to the arrangements and production. It's a very personal project for me, and I put my heart and soul into every note and word.

4. If you had to pick one song, which one would you pick?

Choosing just one song is challenging, but I really like "Dawning of Man" with the long build-up. It is the opening track on the album and I like the way it sets the mood for the whole story. "Sea of Tranquility" is also one of my favorites. Perhaps because it was the first song I wrote for this album. Actually, there were a lot of "firsts" in his song. The first time I wrote lyrics, the first time I did lead vocals, and more! However, I recommend exploring the entire "Odyssey" album. Each song contributes to the epic narrative and mood.

5. Is there a special message in Odyssey? If there is what is it?

At its core, "Odyssey" serves as a cautionary tale about the consequences of environmental destruction and unchecked warfare. Through the story, I confront how humanity have polluted the planet, warmed the atmosphere, and ravaged the nature around us. But it is also a story about the devastating effects of war and a warning about the potential consequences of our actions if left unchecked. Through the lens of science fiction, "Odyssey" explores humanity's relationship with the planet and each other, urging listeners to reflect on the choices we make and the legacy we leave behind. Ultimately, it's a call to action to strive for a better future and to cherish the precious gift of life on Earth.

6. Are there some lyrics that you'd love to share?

This is from the song "Sea of Tranquility". In an act of desperation, he dives deep into the sea of Enceladus, Saturn’s moon. Here he encounters strange alien lifeforms and finds his inner peace:

Strange creatures encircling me
So near, I'm reaching out
Glowing lights before my eyes
In this fountain of life the sea creatures dwell
In the darkest depths of the sea
I let go of my deepest fears
Down here I find my peace
Deep in the sea of tranquility

7. Which inspirations have been important for this album? Like musically or friends, family, someone you'd love to thank especially?

For this album, my inspirations have been the state of the world we live in and my love for science fiction narratives. The effects of global warming, the natural crisis, and the looming conflicts between superpowers have deeply influenced the themes and atmosphere of the music. At the same time, I drew inspiration from sci-fi stories such as Terminator, The Expanse, and Interstellar. From dystopian visions of a future Earth to epic journeys across the cosmos, these stories fueled my creativity and helped shape the story of the album.

Musically, I found inspiration in the work of bands like Within Temptation, Lacuna Coil, Evergrey, Ghost, Kamelot, and Soilwork.

I'd also like to give a special thanks to my friends, family, and fans who have supported me throughout the creative process.

8. Something to add?

To all the metal warriors out there who've joined us on this journey through the cosmic abyss, I raise my horns to you! "Odyssey" isn't just an album — it's a sonic battle cry of epic choruses and blistering guitar solos! So, to all our fellow headbangers, mosh pit maniacs, and metalheads of the galaxy:

Unleash the fury, embrace the chaos, and let the "Odyssey" take you to realms unknown!
