Interviews: BARRUS

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Progressive Rock solo artist BARRUS from Poland. Check out this band and follow him on his FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you plan it or come out just like that?

First, I called the project Butterphant - a combination of the words "butterfly" and "elephant". The thought behind it was that symbolically I felt like an elephant but wanted to be a butterfly. Eventually, I thought that the name didn't sound strong enough and I rather accept that I'm an elephant than chasing something I'm not, thus Barrus (elephant in Latin) came to be the new name.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

I don't want to play any specific genre. This is not something I plan. I just play and create what I feel like. However, I see a tendency for creating more progressive stuff and I think it's because I get bored with my own compositions rather quickly and the prog genre gives you space to not repeat the same riff/verse twice but rather create a musical story of some kind.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

It's only me here, alone making music (help me)

4. Each band member's favorite band?

I don't have a favorite band. It hurts too much to pick one

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Any kind of suffering I experience in life I try to turn into lyrics and music. It's a form of unconscious therapy. Creating monuments of your pain and letting it go this way, accepting it. Also, for me, negative emotions are difficult to express day to day and can only fully be expressed through art.

6. Where was your last gig?

Barrus has never played live yet. My last gig was with my former band MARAZM in Olsztyn, Poland in 2017

7. Where would you like to act?

I'm happy to not play live for now at all. I like writing music, the creation part, and playing live was usually less satisfying in my case. Maybe this will change in the future. That's why I don't have any specific place I would like to act. Any stage that is not a shitty corner in a shitty pub with only a bartender listening would be great.

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

Feature with James Blake would be super weird and awesome at the same time.

9. Whom not?

Unpopular opinion: I hate Guns n Roses

10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?

Yup. The only tip I have is that neither alcohol nor weed is a good idea before the show.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

The list changes over time. Now it would be something like Radiohead, Opeth, King Krule, Jeff Buckley

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

Haven't experienced weird requests worth telling yet

13. What do you think of your fans?

I think that they are beautiful

14. What do you think of our site?

Cool place for discovering new music, and getting to know the bands a bit. In today's algorithm-driven music industry, we are lacking such connections where you get recommendations from another human being not from beep bop bots.

15. Something to add?

Reality is a dream, death is a morning
