Interviews: Beat Me Outta Me

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Alternative Rock/Shoegaze band Beat Me Outta Me from the UK. Check out this band and follow them on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did the band name come from?

Originally, it was the name of a group chat we had in college that Jack named because Beat me outta me is a lyric from the Nirvana song Aneurysm a song we used to jam a bunch/ when we started playing together. Annie recommended that we use the anime, and it just stuck from there

2. Why do you want to play in this genre?

We all have quite different music tastes, but we all love the whole 90s era for various reasons. We like the raw, fun sounds and the energy we can get with it, while still being able to peel back and be more vulnerable

3. Did you know each other before the band formed?

Yeah, we all went to college and knew each other before. Jack, Thady, and Jasper used to play a bunch of Nirvana songs, and Annie needed a band for a gig, so she asked us and a different drummer to play on some of her original tracks. We had such a good time that we decided to form a group properly, and then brought Sam as our main drummer

4. Each band member's favorite band?

Jack - Led Zeppelin

Annie - The Smiths

Jasper - The Strokes

Sam - Slowdive

Thady - The Beatles

5. What inspires you?

We all take inspiration from various artists, and we all approach music in very different ways, which makes it hard to pin down one reason. We take a lot of influence from bands like Smashing Pumpkins, Slowdive, and Fontanes DC on the instrumentation and blend it with lyrics akin to Fleetwood Mac

6. What was your last gig?

The mascara release gig we did here, we aren't on the 11th of April in Peterborough where we had some amazing support from a band called Patchwork

7. Where would you like to act?

Knebworth

8. Who would we like to feature with?

Fontanes DC, Smashing Pumpkins, Paramore

9. Who would we like to feature with?

P diddy

10. Has anyone ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners?

I think the best method for getting over stage fright is exposure therapy. You're going to make mistakes and be embarrassed, but over time, you learn to just roll with it and not worry too much about it. We still get nervous going up, but the nerves push you to perform better. We have taken our time learning how to be good performers, and while we still have a way to go, we're definitely getting there.

11. What bands have inspired you?

I mean, the biggest one in terms of our sound is probably Smashing Pumpkins with the way Jasper and Jack try to layer the guitars, and also how we approach writing. Annie usually shows us a song she's written for acoustic, and it's the guitarist's job to translate it into a fuller band sound. We all share different tastes, but we have a general appreciation for each other's music and delve into each one depending on how we want a song to go. Fontanes are a big influence, mainly for any cool techniques we want to experiment with. Jack is a big fan of older prog music like King Crimson with a focus on technical ability and theory, and Jasper Reigns it in with the chaotic and undisciplined approach. Both sides seem to complement each other, it seems, and with Annie's phenomenal lyrics and melodies, it gives the band a lot to work off. Thady is a big Beatles fan and has a good ear for melody and the art of not adding too much while still filling the space, and Sam takes heavy influence from 90s rock drumming, the likes of Dave Grohl.

12. Weirdest thing someone has asked at a gig?

Jack almost always gets asked if someone can touch his hair at EVERY gig

13. What do you think of your fans?

We love our fans and are always down to have a chat with anyone after each gig. It's a small community right now, but we plan on growing it and are open to everyone. If you connect with the music in any way, we have done what we set out to do, and we were so thankful for all the love given at every show!

14. What do you think of the website?

We're very thankful that we get the opportunity to be interviewed and think the site is a brilliant platform for bands to show themselves off!
