Interviews: Our North
On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Metalcore/Post-Hardcore band Our North from the UK. Check out this band and follow them on their FACEBOOK PAGE.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name? Did you plan it, or did it just come out like that?
The name actually came from a flyer our bass player spotted on the ground one night. He looked down and saw the words ‘Our North’ on it. We felt it really represented us, whether or not you’re originally from the North, when you’re here, it becomes yours too. It’s Our North
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
While we’re all passionate about metal and a wide range of other genres, I (Dan) really wanted to bring rap and trap influences into our sound. It’s too easy to fall into the trap of sounding like just another generic metalcore band. We wanted to break away from the norm and create something that truly stands out
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
Dan, Chris, and Chris have known each other for around 15 years, as we all used to play in another band together, but we left that band due to conflicting ideas and the identity of the band. We then started Our North after finding Jonny and Sam through online ads searching for band members.
4. Each band member's favourite band?
Our favourite bands are always changing as our influences evolve, but collectively, we’re all huge fans of While She Sleeps. They’re a band that’s never been afraid to break the mould and experiment with new ideas, all while maintaining the heaviness at the core of their sound.
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
Inspiration can come from all sorts of situations, but for me (Dan), it’s mainly about telling stories from my own life experiences. For example, our song ‘Choked to Death’ is based on something I went through personally. The song reflects a point in life where we face financial struggles, working tirelessly just to make ends meet, yet feeling like we’re not getting anywhere.
My (Dan) dad suffered a severe workplace accident, while my mum worked tirelessly to keep our household running. I recall starting my first job and giving my entire monthly earnings to support her.
So that’s what drives me to write songs.
6. Where was your last gig?
Our last gig was played in Sheffield at the corporation, we supported a band called Intersphere, who were on their European tour
7. Where would you like to play?
Collectively, we’d love to play Download Festival, it would be an incredible experience and a huge milestone for us.
8. Who would you like to support?
While she sleeps
9. Who not?
At this stage, we wouldn’t turn down a support slot; we believe it’s crucial to get our name out there and build as much momentum as possible.
10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?
Yeah, for sure, we’ve all been at that point where the nerves before a show get the best of you, and maybe you have one too many drinks to try and calm down. But honestly, it’s never the best idea. Being confident in your craft and comfortable with what you’re doing makes the whole experience way less nerve-wracking.
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
We’re all into a huge range of styles and genres, but some of the bands and artists we grew up listening to and who really inspired us include Deftones, NOFX, Jeff Buckley, Eminem, Yelawolf, and Bury Tomorrow. Honestly, we could probably list another thousand bands!
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
Nothing yet
13. What do you think of your fans?
Our fan base might still be small right now, but to everyone who’s given us a chance, we just want to say a huge thank you for all the support.
14. What do you think of our site?
I think it looks great! It’s clear, easy to navigate, and represents you really well.
15. Something to add?
We’re incredibly proud of this new EP, and if you haven’t already, we’d love for you to give it a listen. Don’t hesitate to reach out to us!
