Interviews About Albums: OCEAN OF ANOTHER - Loneliness Of My Kin (2025)
In this new interview, we sat down with the Croatian Modern Metal/Metalcore band OCEAN OF ANOTHER to ask questions about their album, "Loneliness Of My Kin".
1. What can you say about the new EP 'Loneliness of My Kin'?
This EP is our second EP since we started as a band in late 2022. It consists of 6 songs that reside
in the modern metal/metalcore landscape. Thematically, it deals with the human heart torn between
the desire to be loved and accepted and the burden of past traumas in a society ravaged by
consumerism.
2. What is the meaning of the EP title?
The agenda behind this EP is perhaps best summarized by the lyrics from Loneliness of My Kin:
“Will we forever feel alone and lost inside this mortal coil? Is this the price we pay for
meaning?”
Thematically, we deal a lot with how to be human and how to live a life when all of our life is
done under the shadow Death constantly casts on everything we do. Also, we talk a lot about the
system that uses that very notion to beat us into conformity and obedience while taking away
our instincts to search for meaning and connection.
Climate change, war, and the negative effects of capitalism were once seen as left or right
political issues—now, they are the reality we live in. How do we confront these truths when we
still don’t understand what it means to be human?
Our lives have become lonely and barren, but that isn’t a product of our human nature; it is a way
that a power-hungry psychopath used capitalism and war to gain more power and money while
distancing us from our human nature.
To quote 2Pac’s profound lyrics on the matter
‘’ It's time for us as a people to start makin' some changes
Let's change the way we eat
Let's change the way we live
And let's change the way we treat each other
You see, the old way wasn't workin'
So it's on us to do what we gotta do to survive ‘’
3. Which one is the composer of the EP?
We always work as a unit, so this EP, just as the first EP, was composed by all five of us.
4. If you had to pick one song, which one would you pick?
That’s a really hard choice! But if I really had to pick one out, I would pick the title song –
Loneliness of my Kin.
I love the chorus, I think the song arrangement is fresh and interesting, it has a really nasty
breakdown, and I really love the lyrics. Lyrics have a bit of philosophy in them (even a small nod to
Schopenhauer) as well as hermeticism and a deeply emotional journey.
5. Is there a special message in 'Loneliness of My Kin'? If there is, what is it?
Our lives are finite, and we should take that not as a way to be afraid and let other people beat
us into submission, but take it as a way to connect and to discover both inner and outer worlds.
We should see life as a magnificent and fragile, and wonderful miracle that it is and not as something
to be devoured and feared. We should all become a drop in the Ocean of Another and share this
experience of life with each other, and not distance ourselves and close off in fear.
6. Are there some lyrics that you'd love to share?
I love the lyrics from No Time Left to Borrow where we address capitalism and climate change in
a very incendiary quote ‘’ We are finally learning that the wrong Amazon is burning.’’
Also I love the lyrics form Loneliness of my Kin as mentioned above.
Overload is one of the few love songs I ever wrote but I am really happy with the lyrics and I
believe we did a great job of making a love song that invites healing while avoiding cliches that
are usually tied to these types of songs. My favorite lyrics from Overload are ‘’ All my words All
my poetry Just couldn’t save our love From Crumbling I’ll let go of this memory And time will set
me free".
7. Which inspirations have been important for 'Loneliness of My Kin'? Like musically or friends,
family, someone you'd love to thank especially?
Most of the inspiration for the themes on this EP came from the books we read, both philosophy
and other types of books, such as SF or contemporary literature. As well as just the world that
surrounds us and our own search for meaning and a place to belong.
Musically, we were inspired by a lot of modern bands such as The Plot in You, Bad Omens, Silent
Planet, Northlane, and Motionless in White, to name a few.
For me personally, I lot of the inspiration came from reading the Three Body Problem trilogy as well
as the Southern Reach series.
8. Something to add?
Become a drop in the Ocean of Another. Share your feelings, fears, and your love with other
people around you. Keep in mind that change starts from the individual level and then it scales
up, if we try to be a little bit kinder to ourselves and people around us we can change the world
and make it into a place of love and understanding and I think the world could use a bit more
love at this moment.
