Interviews: Woodhawk
On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Fuzz Rock band Woodhawk from Canada. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name? Did you plan it or came out like that?
At the time, Mike and I were huge craft beer fans, and our favourite brewery was Wychwood out of the U.K. We toyed with calling the band Witchwood or Woodwitch, or something like that. But ultimately felt like Witch was overused in the rock and metal scene. So we somehow landed on Woodhawk, and it just stuck. We liked the classic feel of having ‘wood’ in our name. It allowed for a lot of rustic and trippy artwork.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
We just connected with it. Always loved 70’s rock and metal, so it just felt so natural for us.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
Mike and I have known each other since elementary school. And we met Kevin when we were playing gigs in Calgary and needed a permanent drummer. He met up with us, and the rest is history.
4. Each band member's favourite band?
We’re all kind of all over the map. I love Black Sabbath, Mike is a huge Pink Floyd fan, and Kevin is probably Dillinger Escape Plan. But even then, we love bands like Alexisonfire, Better Lovers, Thin Lizzy, and Mutoid Man.
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
Life. We use our band as an outlet. We really dove into the honest heart of our music on the last album, Violent Nature, and it really just helped us. I think we all connect to the songs more than the band. So now we still write that way, and it’s just what we love.
6. Where was your last gig?
Regina, SK. We played with our friends at Black Thunder’s album release show. That was the last date of our 10-year anniversary tour, and it was a great way to wrap it up. With close friends celebrating their new release in a city we love playing so much.
10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?
Everyone does in some way. I read a long time ago that Ozzy Osbourne said it’s good to be nervous. It means you still care. The day he stops getting nervous is when he will stop playing. I always loved that and related to it. Nerves are good.
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
Our friend's bands. We are constantly inspired and in awe of them. Having so many good pals, and watching them kick ass is the best. It inspires us to be better and keep doing it.
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
I don’t think we have been asked for weird things. We get asked for a lot of free stuff. But nothing weird.
13. What do you think of your fans?
They’re awesome! We get to do this because of all the support we’ve received and continue to receive.
14. What do you think of our site?
It’s great! Thanks for showing bands of all statures and supporting us all.
15. Something to add?
You can find our new album Love Finds a Way available everywhere on June 6. We’ll be touring all over Canada in August/ September. If we’re coming to your city, come to a show. Give us a follow on the socials and stay in the loop. Thanks for everything!
