Interviews: Obelisk
On this new occasion, we had the opportunity to interview the Metalcore project Obelisk from Scotland. Check out the interview and follow this project on his INSTAGRAM PROFILE.
1. Where did you get the idea for the name? Did you plan it, or did it just come out like that?
Funny story, actually! So I had the idea for this project years ago, and my ex was going through the “hilarious” of suggesting silly names. One day, she suggested Obelisk because she is an Obelisk, and it reminded me of Yu-Gi-Oh, which was cool! So it’s one last spiteful swipe at her, haha!
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
It kind of developed on its own! I knew I wanted something on the heavier side; if anything, I thought it would turn out heavier. But after I wrote a song called “Stardust Cycle” (on the upcoming album!) I loved it, and kind of went on expanding the sound in that direction!
3. Who plays on the album? Just you or other members?
Just me on the album! I wrote and performed everything on it, all vocals, guitars, synths, and real drums! I had an engineer mix and master the tracks!
4. Who is your favourite band?
Currently Sleep Token! But of all time, Green Day!
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
Typically, things that have an emotional effect on me. A lot of the songs on the album are about dealing with a narcissist in a relationship. Then others deal with the current disparity in wealth we see toda,y and one about the realisation of my past after my autism diagnosis!
6. Where was your last gig?
I haven’t played live yet! I kind of planned this project to be reverse-engineered in that space. I want to try and build a following first before gigging
7. Where would you like to play?
I saw Wage War in SWG3 this year, and it was the first time I was at that venue, and it looked sick!!
8. Who would you like to support?
Sleep Token would be the dream, a huge dream at that! But I’d love to be supporting some other masked folks like black gold! Another would be Electric Call Boy, which would be insane!
9. Who not?
Disturbed. I’ve never been a fan!
10. Have you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?
I’ve never suffered from it, but I think it’s because I don’t take myself too seriously. Advice for that is to have fun and relax. You’re going to make mistakes either way. If you look like you’re having fun, people won’t notice!
11. What bands or artists have inspired you the most?
This is going to sound like an ad for Sleep Token at this point… but then, Electric Call Boy, Green Day, and Bring Me the Horizon!
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
A fan recently asked me to send feet pics. No word of a lie, and if you see me in real life, you’d really have to wonder who would want to see my feet.
13. What do you think of your fans?
They’re incredible! I have the nicest bunch of support I’ve ever seen. I recently blew up from around 80 followers to about 19k in just over 2 months, and the reception has been incredible. I’m super lucky!
14. What do you think of our site?
It’s great stuff! And huge for acts like myself trying to get out there, you guys are doing incredible work!
15. Something to add?
My debut album “Brushed by Darkness” comes out on the 12th of December! Thank you guys so much for having me!
