Interviews: Outlying

On this new occasion, we had the opportunity to interview the Metal band Outlying from Canada. Check out the interview and follow this band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name? Did you plan it or came out just like that?

The idea came because I grew up in a small village that was a bit remote, so that's the main reason. Also, it was short and easy to remember, and back then, no other band had that name.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

I started listening to Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, and bands like that when I was a teenager, because all other kids were listening to that stuff. I was already a guitar player back then, and was drawn to riffs and heavy chords, so I eventually discovered old-school metal like old Metallica and Slayer. I was then introduced to Scandinavian metal by guitar magazines, so that's when I started appreciating harder stuff.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

The first lineup we ever had was when I was a teenager, so yes, they were guys from my school.

4. Each band member's favourite band?

Our drummer says Harakiri For The Sky, our bassist says Rush, and I'm going to go with good old Metallica.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

It's often about personal struggles and social issues, and finding parallels between both.

6. Where was your last gig?

Oh, I believe the last gig was at a tavern in Ottawa.

7. Where would you like to act?

We'd like to travel the world, of course! But that might not be very realistic, so I'd go with playing in Abitibi (an area in Quebec) and New Brunswick, because we've already played there and it's always great.

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

We have friends in bands here that are always fun to play with. But we'd enjoy opening for international bands who play in Montreal and Quebec City, also, if we ever get such an opportunity.

9. Whom not?

There are several local bands we don't really get along with; we're not going to elaborate on that...

10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?

Yes, all you have to do is try to play in front of people more and more and more! Please don't resort to drugs and alcohol; it's a very slippery slope.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

For this band, I have to say, At The Gates, Children Of Bodom, Machine Head, God Forbid, and Evergrey.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

It's not really weird, but I was asked for guitar tabs a couple of times, and it's always cool to see people who want to learn our material.

13. What do you think of your fans?

We're grateful to have people enjoying our music; it's always cool to see that our work is appreciated. We wish to have the opportunity to share our creations with many more people!

14. What do you think of our site?

I wasn't familiar with your site, but I did hear the name before, though! I'm checking it out right now, cool content, also digging the devil's horn cursor!
