Interviews: Blank Atlas
On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Alternative Rock band, Blank Atlas, from England. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name? Did you plan it or came out just like that?
It was so long ago! I think we all came up with names, and then we shortlisted them to a few. Our bassist, Chrissy, came up with Blank Atlas. I wish I could give you a really cool meaning, but it just sounded the coolest.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
We grew up in the naughties when rock music was actually pop. So, it was a no-brainer, really. We started playing after seeing bands like McFly and Busted, then quickly got into Green Day, Foo Fighters, Biffy Clyro, etc. But around 2014, we discovered bands like Press To Meco and Arcane Roots, which led to more of a Riffy alt-rock sound.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
Well, I’ve known the drummer since the womb, and we met Chrissy at 11 years old. So, a long time. We’ve been playing together for 15 years. We plan on going until we’re 80; might as well at this point.
4. Each band member's favourite band?
That is a really tough question!
I think the collective favourite band would be Enter Shikari.
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
Sounds cheesy, but life inspires songs these days. I wish I could say something cool like a STINKY RIFF. But if you haven’t listened to our songs before, they are all pretty sad.
6. Where was your last gig?
Our last gig was playing with our friends in Lastelle in Exeter. Really cool band, they aren’t too different from us. Check 'em out if you like our stuff!
7. Whom would you like to feature with?
I think it has to be Rou Reynolds. Taking to the skies was the first album I bought, so it would be a very full circle moment
8. Whom not?
There’s no one we wouldn’t have as long as they are decent human beings, to be honest. Slide into our DM’s, Stormzy.
9. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?
I think we all get nervous for sure. Especially for bigger gigs. I think it’s just important to remember you’re doing this for fun; it doesn't really matter if people like it or not at the end of the day. If you play enough gigs, you’ll become better and you’ll start gaining some fans.
10. What bands have inspired you the most?
Press to MECO is a big one. It’s a common occurrence that someone comes up to us after a gig and says, “Have you heard of PTM?”. Not so much with our newer stuff, but they showed us different ways to write a rock song! I like to think we have our own sound now, but I’m sure the PTM thing will come up again, and that is only a compliment, really.
11. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
It’s not really weird for me, but one fan asked me to use the small horns, which I loved, but others might have found it weird passing through. It’s an in-joke within our fan base, so it showed me they were the real deal!
12. What do you think of your fans?
Love 'em! Still crazy that one person will listen to our songs on their own accord. Let alone seeing a full tent at a festival. They are the best.
13. What do you think of our site?
It's cool! Very nice to see you giving small bands a cover and giving them a platform to promote themselves. Appreciate it!
14. Something to add?
Our new Single “Leave My Life Behind” is out now on all streaming platforms. It is a special song to me, so I hope you like it!
We’re also going on a UK and Ireland tour starting on the 5th Nov! See you there!
