Interviews: Cartoons Can't Die

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Metal band, Cartoons Can't Die, from England. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name? You planned it, or did it just come out like that?

The name came about from some very sleep-deprived nights between Mac and the old Guitarist Ellie when they watched cartoons and played zombies until 5am. They were watching old shows like Wacky Races and Roadrunner, and the phrase Cartoons Can't Die popped up at some point, and it stuck as a band name. After thinking about it, the name almost changed, but then it's also a name that nobody would forget due to its oddity.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

Dan and Mac have always had many inspirations, and it was almost impossible for either of them to stick to a genre. After a while, it became apparent that sticking to one genre just wasn't going to work, so we decided to go down the road of shiftcore (we haven't found another name for it yet that fits). Play any and all genres. The thing we learnt was that our fans are going to be like us, so they will also have a wide variety of genres they listen to, so why not have a healthy mix in one artist? We are happy writing this way; it still sounds like us, always.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Mac and Dan met at University and wrote music as friends for about 5/6 years before deciding to make it serious and actually put a band together. Mac and Maria have been together for a while, and after a couple of vocalist tryouts, Maria was the most suitable person, so they asked her to front. Ryan appeared from nowhere, briefly chatting to Mac on TikTok about performing in a music video before deciding to become the full-time drummer.

4. Each band member's favourite band?

This is a really tough one as our favourites change regularly, but we will attempt to keep the most consistent artist as our choice.

Mac - Whitechapel

Dan (Danny 5) - orden ogan

Maria - Alterbridge

Ryan - Gojira

 5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Inspiration comes from whatever we are currently listening to, often hooks or riffs in songs where we think Wouldn't it be interesting to do it like this instead or just a general vibe that inspires us. Dan and Mac also like just plugging in guitars and picking random sounds (usually Gojira Archetype for Dan) at random and just jamming.

6. Where was your last gig?

Last show was supporting Eradikator at The Flapper in Birmingham. Great band, great venue!

7. Where would you like to play?

We'd love to play the Ovo Wembley or Graspop in Belgium

8. Who would you like to support?

So we all have a huge range of influences, so we have answered this one individually too:

Dan - Periphery

Mac - Electric Callboy

Maria - Bring Me The Horizon

Ryan - Pantera

9. Who not?

This is a tough one because there's nobody we dislike. Again, we answered individually and came up with a couple of answers. Dan has mentioned someone like Parkway Drive, only because of the immense show they put on, we might get forgotten, although that'd be a great band to play with if we got the chance. Ryan and Maria have said that anyone who parties too hard afterwards needs their chill-out time and sleep! For Mac, it'd probably be someone like Bob Vylan, just don't want to get wrapped up in politics too much, it's not our thing.

10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?

Mac has, all the others just crack on. "Honestly, just gotta jump on stage, it's a skill in itself, and as you do it more, you'll get more confident. Recording and practising is one thing, but on stage is different, but remember that you're up there with friends. Every time you go up, you'll get more used to it. Don't focus on what ifs or the fuck ups; carry on, and all will be well. You'll build more and more confidence, they say it takes 100 shows to know what your live performance persona is"

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Lamb of God, Periphery, Spiritbox, Whitechapel, Gojira, Alterbridge, Catherine

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

We think it has to be the one who asked to wear Maria's jacket, it's a cool jacket to be fair!

13. What do you think of your fans?

They're great! We've had photos showing our merch in New York, they've travelled over 2 hours to come see us, the dedication is really there!

14. What do you think of our site?

It's really good, easy to navigate, lots of content

15. Something to add?

We have lots of shows planned for the album Release across the UK. London, Birmingham, Sheffield, Scunthorpe, Leicester, Southampton, with hopes of jumping into some festivals too!
