Behind The Tracks: Hidden Since Foundation - Man Of Stated Age / Bad Winter.(Double Single) (2026)
Joel (guitars/electronics): we decided to kind of announce this band with a dual single as a way of showing the spectrum we tend to operate in, with ‘Man of Stated Age’ more on the stoner/sludgy end of things and ‘Bad Winter’ representing the doomgaze side. And because these 2 songs were among the shortest we’ve written at that point —especially once we shaved a few minutes off of the beginning and end of the recorded version of Man of Stated Age.’
We recorded these entirely on our own, which was a learning process, but I couldn’t resist layering in a bunch of keyboards and samples and vocal harmonies. Sometimes that stuff is pretty well buried under all the guitars, but with decent headphones you can catch a lot of it.
As to what the songs are ‘about’: well, the lyrics speak for themselves so I’ll address the riffs/chords/structures aspect. ‘Man of Stated Age’ came from my first experiment with a particular ‘alternate’ guitar tuning where I found I could very crudely emulate aspects of a certain Hindustani raga that I’ve always thought had a heavy vibe. (First person in the comments to correctly identify the raga gets a free download code…)
Then ‘Bad Winter’ was an attempt to write one of those songs with a chorus that ‘lifts off’ into something kind of euphoric, but with an undertow of resignation or hollowness; an awareness of how easily the high can or eventually will be deflated. That was the goal anyway: bittersweet with an emphasis on the bitter. If that feeling comes through a little, I’d call it a success.
