Behind The Tracks: We Follow The Earth - Sirens (Single) (2026)
Matthew Crotts: This album follows the crew of the Foamdrinker as they sail across a frozen world to attempt to bring some warmth back to their dying world. In "Sirens," after the crew has thrown the sorcerer overboard, they continue on their mission. Our sorcerer sinks and is tempted by older entities with different motives.
This is one of the first songs I (Matthew Crotts) started writing for the new album. We had just released the album "Extinct" in March 2024, and I was eager to start writing again. I always like to clear my head by working on new songs or riffs. Going into this new album, I knew that I wanted to evolve the band's sound and push slightly more into post-metal territories. I've just always loved the dynamic range in that style of music, heavy one minute, then relaxing, clean sections the next minute. It gives more weight to those heavy riffs when there is a slow build to it.
The writing process for me the last few years has been sitting down at my computer with my guitar and Reaper (DAW) open, and just recording riffs one after another as they come to me. I'll write over a period of days or weeks until I have a sizeable collection of new ideas. Not all of these are good riffs, or they may be good, but they don't inspire me to expand upon them. When one does inspire me, I'll lay down some basic programmed drum beats and start fleshing out a full song. Once I've gotten a song that I am satisfied with, I'll take it to the rest of the guys in the band, and we will start practicing it, making little changes here and there, figuring out what works and what needs improvement.
My brother, Robert Crotts, is the lyric writer. Together, we'll decide what the overall theme of the album is going to be, and he'll flesh out the story and start writing lyrics. Because of the way we do this, I have to make a decision at the beginning of how many songs in total the next album will have, so he can have a solid road map for how to plan out the story through the lyrics.
