Interviews: The Venus Fly Trap

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Post-Punk band The Venus Fly Trap from the UK. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name? Did you plan it, or did it just come out like that?

It was chosen... It's a plant that eats insects rather than the other way round, so a nice juxtaposition. First found near a crater in the Arizona desert...connections with the planets, space travel, and sci-fi...also Greek mythology venus the goddess of love. Women from Venus, men from Mars, so plenty of ideas for imagery and lyrics...

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

Always been interested in the darker side of alternative music...and punk/new wave spawned post punk, and that had a wider range of influences.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

We have been through various lineup changes, but myself and ANDY DENTON heve known each other for years, and I was aware of his band prior to him joining.

4. Each band member's favourite band?

A lot of bands i could say: Bowie, Velvet Underground, Roxy Music, Sex Pistols, Buzzcocks, Joy Division, Magazine, Chemical Brothers, The Prodigy, Kraftwerk...you can hear elements of each in the music.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Generally, films, especially sci-fi/film noir. Authors like Orwell, Burroughs, and Kafka. People like Warhol, Dali, David Lynch...

6. Where was your last gig?

It was at a festival in Sheffield...

7. Where would you like to perform?

Anywhere in Japan.

8. Whom would you like to perform with?

A duet with Marilyn Monroe.

9. Whom not?

Any artist with dubious politics.

10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?

You should be nervous; it means you're excited.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

What got me into being in a band was the punk/new wave explosion. It was a call to arms, a real catalyst.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

A quote from the bible.

13. What do you think of your fans?

A very discerning lot, if not a little elusive...

14. What do you think of our site?

Good to see you are promoting unknown music to a wider audience.

15. Something to add?

We will be celebrating 40 years in July with a new release called DEJA VU 1986- 2026, a recollection plus rarities album out via GLASS RECORDS MODERN.
