Interviews: New Sun

On this new occasion, we had the opportunity to interview the Groove Metal/Death Metal band New Sun from Italy. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name? Did you plan it, or did it just come out like that?

We were looking for a simple yet catchy name, one of those names that, as soon as you start saying it, it feels natural for anyone listening to finish it. But we also wanted it to embody specific concepts: change, hope, and rebirth. After a lot of brainstorming, the rising sun bringing a new dawn felt like the most fitting metaphor for the band’s name.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

We’re all metal lovers, though we each lean toward different styles. Some of us prefer genres like death or thrash, while others are into grind, black metal, or folk. We’re a very diverse group! We put everyone's ideas on the table and went about it the old-school way: everyone brought their own influences and experiences to the rehearsal room, jamming together until our sound slowly started to take shape.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

No, it all started with our guitarist, Lorenzo. He wanted to create something with metal as the common denominator, without locking down a specific sub-genre right at the beginning. He found the first members of the lineup through a social network for musicians (which originally included keyboards). Over time, the lineup was streamlined and changed until we reached our current, stable core.

4. Each band member's favourite band?

Tool for the guitarist, Metallica for the drummer, our singer absolutely loves Killswitch Engage, and the bassist is a huge Black Sabbath fan. But honestly, for all of us, there are way too many more to list!

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Usually, we start with a guitar or bass riff that's packed with groove born organically either at home or right in the rehearsal room. Other times, we start directly with the song structure or the specific atmosphere and vibes we want the track to convey. From there, we focus on making it unique and personal to us, building a specific theme around it to develop lyrics with a deep message. For us, creating music means sharing a piece of who we are.

6. Where was your last gig?

At the "Fasol Metal Fest" in Revine Lago on May 1st. It was fantastic! We shared the stage with a ton of new bands in a breathtaking mountain location. We really hope to play there again soon.

7. Where would you like to act?

We’re aiming for the main clubs and festivals in Italy for next year, and then we want to push beyond that. We really hope we can pull it off!

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

It would be an absolute dream to open for the heavy hitters of the scene, like Gojira, Avatar, and Sylosis.

9. Whom not?

None come to mind right now, but we’d definitely avoid bands with a negative political or racial stance. Despite the genre we play, we are very peaceful and open-minded people.

10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?

It’s happened to all of us. Having all those eyes on you can be intimidating, and the rush of adrenaline mixed with the fear of messing up can put on a lot of pressure. The best advice we can give is to trust your bandmates. You are never alone on that stage!

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

We had a ton of trouble just agreeing on the genre we actually play! Like we said, everyone brings their own style to the mix. If you listen to our songs, you can catch flashes of different inspirations, but we’ve always actively avoided clichés and copycatting. We actually like to flip this question around: Who do you think we sound like?

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

We were actually asked to do children's songs once! Surprisingly, they performed really well on social media.

13. What do you think of your fans?

They are our lifeblood. Without them, we are nothing. Without that support, how can a band even have a future?

14. What do you think of our site?

It was a really pleasant surprise! It's a great platform for discovering new talent and underground scenes. Kudos to you guys!

15. Something to add?

We cannot wait to drop our first album; we are so excited! And as a little insider bonus, we can tell you that we’re already working on the next album, and there are plenty of surprises in store! 😉
