Interviews: Petrosa

On this new occasion, we had the opportunity to interview the Stoner Metal/Doom Metal band Petrosa from Italy. Check out the interview and follow the band on their INSTAGRAM PROFILE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name? Was it planned, or did it just come naturally?

Actually, the band's name comes from a real place near my hometown. The area is called Petrosa, and it looks almost like a small desert because of its dry, rocky landscape. When I was younger, I used to go there to write songs and lyrics, or simply to relax and listen to music. Since the kind of music we play evokes dreamy, desert-like atmospheres, and our sound is built around heavy, massive guitar tones and strong distortion, I felt that the name fit perfectly.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

Personally, I think it's an incredibly liberating and exciting genre to play. When that huge wall of sound hits you, filled with powerful harmonies and heavy distortion, the adrenaline starts flowing, and you feel completely free. It's also a genre that leaves plenty of room for experimentation and different influences. You can write tight, heavy riffs, but also create ethereal songs that take listeners on a journey, using unique guitar and bass effects to shape different moods and atmospheres.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Actually, no. The current Petrosa lineup has quite a funny story behind it. I was looking for musicians to build a stable band, and one day, while I was grocery shopping, I got a call from Giorgio Monza, who happens to be my insurance agent. He had seen my profile picture with a guitar and asked if I played heavy music, something along the lines of Stoner Rock. I immediately took the opportunity and invited him to join the project.

With Giorgio, it was pretty much love at first sight. We connected instantly, both as musicians and as friends. He's now our drummer.

After a few auditions, we found our singer and frontman, Aldo Colciago. He has over twenty years of experience and a deep baritone voice that impressed us right away. We quickly developed a strong artistic connection as well as a great friendship.

The final piece of the puzzle was finding a bass player. It wasn't easy, but eventually we met Andrea Vignati, the youngest member of the band. He's an excellent bassist, not only from a technical standpoint but also as a songwriter. Needless to say, we immediately found great chemistry with him as well.

4. What is each band member's favourite band?

I'm not one hundred percent sure because we listen to a lot of different music, but the names that come up most often are Audioslave for Aldo, Valley of the Sun for Giorgio, Iron Maiden for Andrea, and Kyuss for me.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Most of the time, personal experiences, whether they're recent or from the past. Personal reflections play a big role as well, and I often draw inspiration from books and stories that I read. There's no politics in our lyrics—just free and honest music.

6. Where was your last gig?

Our last show was at Rock N' Roll in Milan. It was a fantastic experience.

7. Where would you most like to perform?

We don't really have a specific place in mind. What matters most to us is bringing an entertaining show and a great musical performance to whoever comes to listen.

8. Who would you like to collaborate or feature with?

We haven't really thought about it yet, but we're always happy to collaborate with other artists and create something original together.

9. Who would you not like to collaborate or feature with?

As long as there's mutual respect, we're open to working with anyone.

10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Do you have any tips for beginners on how to overcome it?

Maybe we felt a little nervous before our very first show, but nothing too serious. We all had previous live experience, and once we step on stage, any fear disappears, and the adrenaline takes over. If I had to give one piece of advice, it would be not to overthink it. Enjoy the evening, have fun, wait for your turn to play, and once those first notes come out, everything starts to feel natural.

11. Which bands have inspired you the most?

For our debut album, Roadburn Chronicles, the biggest influence was definitely Kyuss. They were constantly playing in my headphones while I was writing those songs.

That said, I never wanted to imitate their style. I wanted to take inspiration from it, especially from the way they combined desert-rock melodies with heavy, driving rhythms. Welcome to Sky Valley was a truly eye-opening album for me.

At the same time, there are many other influences throughout the record, ranging from Blues and Punk to Heavy Metal. As I mentioned before, that's one of the most exciting aspects of this genre: blending different influences, experimenting, taking risks, and eventually discovering something that feels original.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you?

Nothing too strange so far, but let's see what the future brings!

13. What do you think of your fans?

They're simply amazing. They've supported us at every single show we've played and have always given us an incredibly warm welcome.

Every time we step on stage, we can't wait to see them again and share that energy together.

14. What do you think of our site?

I think it's fantastic that your website supports smaller bands like ours and gives us the opportunity to grow and keep our project moving forward.

You're doing something really valuable for the underground music scene, and we're sincerely grateful for this opportunity.

15. Is there anything else you'd like to add?
