Behind The Tracks: Layaway - We Won't Die (Single) (2026)

"We Won't Die" was born out of its haunting two-note, three-chord intro. We wanted to create a contrasting song that made use of that very clean, ambient-sounding guitar but that had a stark contrast in the chorus and driving parts of the song. This was achieved by going down the way on the verse, making things sound loose and almost throwaway before tightening up on the pre-chorus (which has very different rhythms to any other song we've ever done) for a really nice contrast in groove and song development before going into a full-blown driving chorus. The song was tracked at Mark Morrow's studio in Edinburgh, which gave our bassist Fraser Macdonald the chance to really experiment with effects in this song (evident in the verses).

At the time, I was writing lyrics that had big payoffs at the end, where the outro of the song has lyrics which aren't featured anywhere else in the song. Trying to deliver the song's key tagline/message in a sort of bang at the end. One point to make is we used synths in the track to really hammer home the driving sense of the drums and bass during the heavier sections, which was a bit of a light bulb moment for us to add more depth to our heavier sections of songs. We think it works and delivers that bit of chunky synth goodness we were looking for.
