Interviews: Blood Druid
1. For readers discovering Blood Druid for the first time, how would you describe the band's sound and identity?
We would describe our sound as metal from every era, and our identity would be just to keep it simple and brutal.
2. Blood Druid formed after members left a previous project with the goal of creating something heavier. What inspired that decision, and how did the band come together?
When I (guitarist) and I left the other band, we had been talking when we were in it about how we liked heavier bands, and I would send him stuff that I thought of that wouldn't work for the other band because it was an '80s rock band. And so shortly after we both left, we started looking for members, and within a short time we found all of them, and we had a pretty big catalog of songs already, just the two of us writing before we even had all of our members.
3. What inspired the title “Organ Harvest”, and what themes or concepts run throughout the album?
We were trying to go back to early death metal like Cannibal Corpse and Obituary.
4. How does “Organ Harvest” build upon what you established with the Demise EP?
Every release up to Demise, we kind of were doing a more Nu-metal sound, but with Demise we decided to go more in a death metal route, and with this one we definitely build on that sound and really take it further.
5. Your sound blends classic death metal brutality with nu-metal groove. How did you develop that combination, and what makes it work for Blood Druid?
Well, we're all big nu-metal fans, so whatever we do, that sound kind of always creeps into everything we do.
6. Bands like Lamb of God, Six Feet Under, and Throwdown are listed as influences. What elements from those artists have had the biggest impact on your music?
It would be the groove and the fact that you don't need to write something overly complex for it to be good. Sometimes just seems simple chugging will do.
7. Can you walk us through the songwriting process for “Organ Harvest”? How do ideas typically come together within the band?
The guitarists will write and record song ideas, then send them to the others, and if we like it, we'll start thinking of parts for it, so when we come together to jam, we already have ideas.
8. Were there any songs on the album that were particularly challenging or rewarding to write and record?
It would probably be Prey or Predator; that one changed a bit when we went to record it, and I would say it sounds better now.
9. Tell us about the recording process. Did you try anything new on this album compared to previous releases?
Not really; we have the process pretty down at this point, being our 5th release. But the guy we use to record has been getting better every release.
10. The artwork is the first thing fans see before hearing the music. What inspired the cover art, and how does it connect to the album?
We decided just to go real simple with the artwork and do a saw, which signifies we are getting ready to harvest your organs.
11. Blood Druid has been building momentum in the Midwest metal scene. What has the response been like since the album's release?
It's definitely been building with every release, and this one has been getting a really good response since we released it.
12. What can fans expect from a Blood Druid live show?
We go all out on stage, and we just got a new drummer with this release, so you will get to see some new takes on our older stuff too now.
13. What do you think sets Blood Druid apart from other modern death metal and groove metal bands?
I think it's our willingness to not stay in one genre; we take from all genres, which I feel a lot of bands really don't do. They mostly stick to their area.
14. Are there any upcoming tours, festivals, or future releases that fans should keep an eye out for?
We have a show in August at Park Theater in Holland, Michigan that's gonna be our drummer's first show with us.
15. What goals do you hope Blood Druid accomplishes over the next few years?
Hopefully we can get into Michigan Metal Fest, a big festival that they put on every year.
16. If someone has never heard Blood Druid before, which track from “Organ Harvest” would you recommend they start with, and why?
Cowards, it's simple and brutal everything we are going for in one song.
