Interviews: Cor de Lux
On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Post-Punk/Noise Rock band Cor de Lux from Italy. Check out the interview and follow the band on their INSTAGRAM PROFILE.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name? Did you plan it or did it just come out like that?
Dawn: It was about 6 months of back-and-forth phone texting for band name ideas. It became a challenge to see if all 4 could agree on one. The top contender that I personally liked before Cor de Lux was Talk Test. Two liked it, two didn’t. I started looking up Latin meanings for certain words, and one of them was Cor de Lux, which means Heart of Lightning. Without getting into too many details, 2 of the guys in the band had both had major heart surgeries. The drummer loved the Lux part as he was a huge fan of The Cramps. In the early years, we had a ritual of listening to the Cramps before arriving at a gig. We all just liked the name, and no one but a horse ( famous Dutch warm blood stallion) had it. The horse symbolized it all for me as I grew up training horses, and the fact we named it Dust soon on a major label, Year of the Horse coming out on the actual Year of the Horse is pretty special to me.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
I want to play whatever comes naturally to our chemistry together. I do have a desire for a heavier, harder sound and sometimes push that in a loose jam.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
Not really. I knew the drummer at the time, the original one ( Dana Quinn ), through surfing. The guitarists Tim and I met and really had chemistry playing, so we wanted to start something, so we found our John and Dana. Dana, who isn’t in the band right now, came to our last show with his new daughter, and it was her first show, which was a full circle moment.
4. Each band member's favourite band?
Dawn: Blonde Redhead fuck I hate only listing one, though. Tropical Fuck Storm currently is in heavy rotation.
Tim: Fugazi / Thee Oh Sees
John: Future Islands / Minus the Bear
Jacob: The Beatles / Mars Volta
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
Life’s tragic emotions of day-to-day life help us write songs. Bands always inspire us; the joy of touring is seeing other great acts.
6. Where was your last gig?
Richmond Music Hall with Metz singer’s new project Weird Nightmare
7. Where would you like to act?
Europe … haven’t been yet, really want to
8. Whom would you like to feature with?
Sunny Day Real Estate, Unwound, Mclusky, Wombo, Built to Spill, Protomartyr, Melvins, Rye Coalition, Pinback, Dry Cleaning, Squid, probably not Kim Gordon because I would be too nervous.
9. Whom not?
Hmmmm I don’t think I could play with The Jesus Lizard because the whole time I’d be comparing myself to not living up to David’s antics and/or wildness. Love that band live. I would rather just watch them... it would be like us opening for GWAR lol
10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?
Yes, my first show in front of 800 people I winged it. Backstage, I was pacing, trying to remember songs in my head, and kept telling Tim I forgot. 35 seconds into the first song, I was ok
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
Blonde Redhead, Tool, King Crimson, Early Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Sonic Youth, Preoccupations, Sigur Ros, Chat Pile, Pile, all the piles lol
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
I had a guy try to hand me dead roaches not the kind you smoke, but the bugs and ask to put them on my pedal board.
13. What do you think of your fans?
Do we have fans lol?
14. What do you think of our site?
It’s heat. Any proof that takes their time to research and help people connect through music? We love to support.
15. Something to add?
It’s 11:15 on a Thursday; it’s sunny here in Kill Devil Hills, NC. I’m about 900 feet from the ocean and about to go take a swim and get some shit done before my adhd brain distracts me. Go listen to this band we play with them in NY soon, and they rip:
