Behind The Artworks: Skylake - The Deep Dive (2026)
The Deep Dive was originally a working title, a nice little nod to our band name, but it stuck because we found we
really did dive very deep in the process of making this record. It was a long, adventurous journey to shape our
music the way it turned out to be. When a song didn’t work, we dug our teeth in and didn't let go until we found
something that we were really thrilled about. And in this journey there was also a lot of growth and development:
both in our music, such as Bart learning to play the cello and flute and Suzan working intensely with a vocal
coach, but also in terms of writing together, frustration over things that didn’t work and pure joy for the things that
did work. But most of all, working on and deepening the friendship that encompassed the whole experience.
That’s why we eventually decided to stay with the name The Deep Dive.
For our album art, we wanted to do a play on the album title, and that led to the opportunity to align with our previous album art for In Orbit, which was inspired by our band name. It's another kind of surrealist piece, created by our bassist Charlie Feld, where the twist is that the surface of this body of water is at the bottom. There’s a diver who found their way to this surface, reaching towards a reflection of themselves. But their motivation and thoughts are intentionally ambiguous: maybe they're trying to escape from the water for some ominous reason, or maybe in this reflection they find a version of themselves that they were looking for for a long time.
