Interviews About Albums: Critical Defiance - Rivers Of Blood (2026)

In this new interview, we sat down with the Chilean Thrash Metal band Critical Defiance to ask questions about their album, "Rivers Of Blood".

1. What can you tell us about this new EP/CD?

Rivers of Blood is our fourth full-length album and probably the record that best represents Critical Defiance as we are today. It is a fast, aggressive, and dark album, but it also addresses a broader concern with the way violence, frustration, and decay affect the individual and the environment around them. Musically, we continue working within the Thrash Metal we have built over all these years, while allowing ourselves to expand the structures, harmonies, and dynamics without losing the violence or speed. There is also a very strong connection to our territory, especially through “Valparaíso,” a song that existed long before the rest of the album and finally found its place here. The record brings together different stages of the band while also representing quite clearly where we are now.

2. What is the meaning behind the name of the EP/CD?

At first, Rivers of Blood had a much more symbolic meaning. The concept was partially inspired by Un Río de Sangre by Violeta Parra, a work connected to violence, injustice, and different episodes in Chilean history. As we composed the album, the concept evolved along with the songs. The “river of blood” stopped being only a metaphor and began to represent something much more concrete: violence, revenge, war, abandonment, hatred, and the way all these things eventually become part of everyday reality. Today, the title represents both things: a symbolic image and, at the same time, something that truly exists around us.

3. Who composed the CD/EP?

The songwriting usually begins when one of the members brings in a proposal, whether it is a riff, a melody, a structure, or a more developed idea, and from there we work on it together until it takes its final form. The original composition credits the person who created the core of the song, both melodically and structurally, but all the members then participate in the arrangements and development of the material. In this way, each song retains the identity of the person who started it, but it also becomes something that belongs to Critical Defiance as a whole. Sebastián Palominos was also in charge of production, and since he is a member of the band as well, the final sound remained closely connected to the way we actually play and understand our music.

4. If you had to choose one song, which one would you choose?

It would probably be “Valparaíso.” It is a very particular song within our discography. It is almost eight minutes long, it is sung in Spanish, and musically it has a different dynamic from the rest of the album. The song was originally composed many years ago, but it finally found its place on Rivers of Blood. It speaks directly about the territory we come from: the beauty, violence, poverty, decay, struggle, and permanent contradiction that exist in Valparaíso. For us, it is not simply a song about a city; it is a way of representing where Critical Defiance comes from. And bringing a song like this to Europe has a special meaning for us.

5. Is there a special message on this EP/CD? If so, what is it?

We do not believe the album has a single message that must be interpreted in only one way. There are different scenarios and perspectives throughout the songs, but there is a common thread related to violence, alienation, destruction, and the way human beings can end up reproducing the very things that destroy them. “Dead Tongues” deals with images of fanaticism, violence, and voices claiming divine authority. “Glorify War” addresses the human machinery that turns death into something worthy of glorification. “The Feeling Destroyer” speaks about emotional destruction and how people can end up reduced to tools in the pursuit of status, power, or recognition. We are not trying to provide answers. We prefer to present the conflict and let each person find their own interpretation.

6. Is there any lyric or excerpt from the lyrics that you would like to share?

There is an excerpt from “The Feeling Destroyer” that represents something very important to us: “No scars earned, No blood paid, Kneel to the throne, No voice left, just bones.”

To us, these lines carry a lot of weight because they condense the feeling of the song without needing to explain everything. “No scars earned, no blood paid” speaks about people who want to obtain the rewards of power without having gone through the struggle that supposedly gives those rewards meaning. Then it transforms into “Kneel to the throne”: submission, hierarchy, the willingness to destroy one’s own voice in order to remain close to power. And finally: “No voice left, just bones.”

That last line is probably the most important part. The result of that process is not victory. It is emptiness. There is no voice, identity, or resistance left; only the remains of what was once a person. That is why we chose these lines. They are violent, but not because they describe blood or physical destruction. They are violent because they describe what happens when ambition, submission, and the desire for recognition consume everything human within a person. In a way, the entire album is filled with blood, but this is the kind of destruction that happens before the blood is even visible.

7. What inspirations were important for this album? They can be musical, friends, family, or someone you would especially like to thank.

The main inspirations come from very different places. Musically, we remain deeply connected to the Thrash Metal that shaped us and to the underground scene of the Valparaíso Region, which has been fundamental to the way we understand a band and a movement. There was also a very strong inspiration from our own territory. Valparaíso appears directly on the album, not only as a geographical reference, but as an experience. The city has beauty, violence, decay, history, and contradictions that are difficult to separate from those of us who grew up here.

8. Is there anything else you would like to add?

We simply want to thank you for the space and everyone who still cares about listening to music, buying records, attending concerts, and keeping scenes outside the major circuits alive. We are now preparing our first European tour, so we are taking Rivers of Blood directly to the stages and to the place where we truly understand this music: every corner of the world.
