Interviews: Annihilus Mundi

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Death Metal band Annihilus Mundi from the USA. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name? Did you plan it, or came out just like that?

The band was named sometime around 2017 or 2018. I knew I liked the word “annihilation” because I had just seen the movie of the same name. Eventually I settled on “annihilation of the world”, but figured it might be easier to ensure no other band had the same name if I translated it into Latin. Hence, Annihilus Mundi.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

Progressive metal has always been my bread and butter. I discovered Dream Theater when I was around 15, and it spiraled over the next 5 or so years until I finally ended up writing my first album.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Initially, the band was just me and Noah, our singer. He and I have been friends since 10th grade. Later on, when Annihilus Mundi graduated from studio band to live band, the members were all people I knew from other bands I had previously played with.

4. Each band member's favourite band?

Dan - Dream Theater, Linkin Park, and Avenged Sevenfold.

Noah - Opeth, Mirrorthrone.

Chris - Fallujah, The 1975, Casiopea.

Davy - Kardashev, Haken, Devin Townsend.

Rick - Opeth, Cradle of Filth, Pink Floyd, Devin Townsend.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

I’m most often inspired by emotionally intense narratives. Musically, albums like Metropolis Pt.2, Affinity, and The Fox & The Bird have very beautiful and introspective stories. I love albums with vibes like that and try my best to recreate that energy.

6. Where was your last gig?

As of writing, our last show was in Nashua, NH, at Terminus Underground. By the time this is published, we will likely have already played at the Rockwell Theater in Somerville, MA, and Alchemy in Orovidence, RI, supporting Greylotus, Dawn of Ouroboros, and Exist.

7. Where would you like to act?

Our immediate next goal is to work our way into other New England territories, down the East Coast, and out into the Midwest. New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Indianapolis, Nashville, Atlanta, etc.

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

We have a wide collection of influences and heroes we'd love to work with down the line. In terms of musical collaboration, it's impossible to say, because it would depend on what the song requires first. In terms of touring, it would be a dream of mine to tour with Ne Obliviscaris.

9. Whom not?

We are not interested in collaborating with individuals who do not align with our values, all of which are quite explicit in our music. Otherwise, we are open to collaborations of all kinds.

10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?

There's always going to be a touch of stage fright. I find that stage fright usually manifests as fear of doing something wrong and publicly embarrassing yourself in the earlier parts of one's career. Later on, or at least for me nowadays, it manifests as anxiety over potential technical issues. Both aspects of stage fright are difficult to overcome and will only fade with repeated practice and exposure to adversity.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

I tend to describe our music as Dream Theater song structures and Avenged Sevenfold riffs mixed with Ne Obliviscaris tonality and Cynic timbre. Those are all the biggest influences, though there are plenty more.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

We haven't been given anything I'd consider weird. The most interesting thing we've received is some very cool interpretive fan art based on the concept of our first album. That was really cool to see.

13. What do you think of your fans?

Our fans are great. We still have a bunch of people coming to our shows that saw us open for Septicflesh in our first few months as a band. It's always a great feeling when you meet somebody in the context of your band's performance, and then they continue seeing and supporting you after the fact.

14. What do you think of our site?

I like that you guys feature almost exclusively smaller, underground music. I wish more larger publications would take advantage of their platform and do the same.

15. Something to add?

Our new album The Dead Sea Scrolls drops November 6th. We're immensely grateful to all the fans who have checked out the singles we've released so far, including our most recent drop, Black Moon, and we can't wait to share the rest of the album with you!
