Interviews: Fimir
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name? Did you plan it, or did it come out just like that?
I stumbled across an interesting article about Syrian assassins and the poison they used, which they mixed from various flowers. One of these paralysing poison mixtures was known colloquially as ‘fimir’. I thought that might make a suitable name for a metal band.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
When we disbanded our previous line-up, ‘Church of Void’, which played traditional doom metal, I was left with the nagging thought that I’d like to record an album of my own songs in the same style. So I gathered a band, and we decided to make this one album. Well, it didn’t stop there, and now a second album is on the way.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
The lads are the same as in my previous band, except that we found our drummer, H. Wizzard, through our singer, Magus Corvus. Wizzard also had a rehearsal place ready, which we didn’t have at the time, so we were lucky in that respect too.
4. Each band member's favourite band?
Ahh, a tough one... I am into many kinds of music, and my roots are in black metal, but I could mention bands like Primordial, Rotting Christ, Queen, Bruce Springsteen, Summoning, Reverend Bizarre, and so on.
For the other band members:
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
Classic sources of inspiration for the band are, of course, literature, films, music and the northern wilderness – after all, we live in Finland, where the long, dark winter is illuminated by the Northern Lights and moonlit snowdrifts. On our latest album, the chaotic state of the world and humanity’s downward spiral from one catastrophe to the next have been a significant source of inspiration.
6. Where was your last gig?
We played it in our hometown with Dö and Orbiter. Nice gig and great bands!
7. Where would you like to act?
In fact, almost anything goes. Getting gigs is painfully difficult these days. There’s an overwhelming number of bands out there, and unless you’ve got enough contacts, it takes a huge amount of effort, blood, and sweat to get your band a gig.
8. Whom would you like to feature with?
Our new album features the world-renowned bandoneon player Henrik Sandås, as well as Christoffer Clavebring from the band Acolytes of Moros on a short vocal part. Apart from them, I haven’t had any particular requests regarding guest artists on our albums.
9. Whom not?
I wouldn’t work with anyone whose values and worldview conflict with my own.
10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?
As far as I know, none of us has ever suffered from stage fright. A little nervousness is all part of it; it gives the performance a bit of edge. Many people may try to ease their nerves with alcohol or other intoxicants, but I wouldn’t recommend it, as overindulgence can ruin the whole gig.
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
Bands like Pentagram, Cirith Ungol, Reverend Bizarre, Type 0 Negative, Conan, Acolytes of Moros etc.
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
Nothing out of the ordinary has happened with Fimir, but as regards one of my other bands, we received a message from a couple who wanted an instrumental version of one of our songs, which they played whilst walking down the aisle at their church wedding. We sent them the version in question, and the couple was extremely grateful.
13. What do you think of your fans?
First of all, our fans have excellent taste in music! Our fans share, at least to some extent, a similar outlook on life and interests to ours, so in that respect we’re all part of the same big heavy music family.
14. What do you think of our site?
A really great website. It’s exactly this sort of community spirit that keeps heavy metal alive. Bands, the media, gig organisers and, of course, the fans all keep the scene going, which means so much to all of us.
15. Something to add?
To the readers: do check out our album Cosmic Heavy Doom, out on 20th November, and keep up the good work with metal and music – hopefully we’ll see you at gigs sooner or later.
