Interviews: Jutebox

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Funk Rock band Jutebox from Scotland. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name? Did you plan it, or did it come out like that?

The name “Jutebox” was created because the band started out in Dundee back in late 2022. The Jute pays tribute to that after the Jute, Jam and Journalism of Dundee, and similar to a Jukebox we are a multi-genre, versatile fusion band who can play whatever the audience wants, bringing good vibes to all our shows. Hence the name “Jutebox”.

2. Why did you want to play this genre??

So our sound is a real fusion of genres, and we can’t really say, per se, it is one specific genre. It is a fusion sound of funk, ska, blues, rock, soul, and reggae all mixed together. We based the band on this model as it allows us to not be restricted when we write together and also because we all have different musical influences.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Yes and no. The original band, as previously stated, was formed in Dundee, so the original lineup was literally a group of friends who met through uni or just the student nightlife in Dundee and decided to make music. Then in late 2024/early 2025, the band moved to Glasgow and a whole new lineup was formed. At that stage, I (Dan) knew some of the current Jutebox members through playing in the Scottish music scene for some time, and from there we found the right members to fit the new-look band.

4. Each band member's favourite band??

We all struggle to pick one favourite band each, but some of our favourite bands are Madness, Bad Manners, Vulfpeck, Queen, Chic, and closer to home - High Fade.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

This isn’t a straight answer question for us, as our influences come from many different places. However, a lot of our songs are written on relatable topics such as love, friendship, and, to be honest, just everyday life and its struggles (although that may be rather cliché).

6. Where was your last gig?

Our last gig was at Stramash in Edinburgh, and it was an incredible one. It was our first gig in the capital for quite a while, and we had the crowd well and truly bouncing.

7. Where would you like to play?

I think for us - being a Glasgow band - The Barrowland Ballroom is definitely one that is high on our bucket list and is one venue we aspire to play in the near future.

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

I think two bands that come to mind would be Tom McGuire and the Brassholes or High Fade. I think a collab there would be incredible.

9. Whom not?

Diddy.

10. Have you ever suffered from stage fright?? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?

I wouldn’t say specifically “stage fright” as we’ve all been doing this a long time now. But one thing I would say for beginners or folks starting out playing in bands is that nerves are totally natural - and we still get a little bit of nerves even nowadays. Without having nerves, you don’t push yourself to reach the highest level you can. Nerves mean that you care about what you’re doing, which is the most important thing. So my advice as a frontman is to breathe and have fun, and the nerves will turn to adrenaline.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

I think for us, bands such as Madness and Bad Manners are big inspirations as they have thrived in the Ska and alternative scene for a long time. The individuality and also the longevity of both bands are two things we take a lot from.

12. What’s the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

My pants.

13. What do you think of your fans?

We love our fans. We love and respect anyone who supports us and attends our live shows. They are the reason we keep going and keep trying to put on the best and most entertaining live shows we can!

14. What do you think of our site?

We think it’s great. Very informative and helpful.

15. Anything to add?

Mon the Jutebox.
