Interviews: Rise From Your Grave
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name? Was it planned, or did it just happen organically?
We'd originally planned something a little darker or more serious, like "From the Grave" or something similar. But I wanted to include a reference to my love of video games and found the quote from Altered Beast on the Sega Genesis, "Rise From Your Grave," to be a cool nod that also fit within the realm of Horrorpunk
3. Why did you choose to play this genre?
It hit all the right buttons from a songwriting perspective. I had previously been in metal and hardcore punk bands and wanted to somehow combine the two in a way that was both catchy and exciting.
4. Did you know each other before forming the band?
The band didn't formally become a live act until 2024, but we'd all been playing together as another group for about a year before that point. Adam and Brandon both helped in various capacities when RFYG first began as a solo or studio project. However, we didn't start collaborating on songwriting until we became an official live band in 2024.
5. What is each band member's favorite band?
One of the things that makes us work so well together is our varied influences: Brandon's favorite band is Everygrey, Mine (Tom's) is Megadeth, Adam's is The Beatles or Tame Impala, and Justin's is Teenage Bottle Rocket. But we all have so many crossover points between the genres of those bands that really meld into the songs we make.
6. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
Horror media. Books, movies, video games, other horror bands, etc. And writing music that excites us. While ultimately we write music for fans to listen to, it has always come down to making songs that WE would want to listen to if we were fans of RFYG.
7. Where was your last gig?
Mr. Smalls Theater for the Millvale Music Festival
8. Where would you like to perform in the future?
We'd love to play more outside of our home state to hang out with all the horrorpunk fans across the states!
9. Which artist or band would you like to collaborate with?
We love collaborating with other artists. Especially those who are very different from what we do. It brings in a new flavor that we wouldn't have introduced otherwise.
10. Is there anyone you wouldn’t want to collaborate with?
Nothing's 100% off the table. I would have to imagine we'd only know if something didn't work rather than ruling out any group or artist outright.
11. Have any of you ever experienced stage fright?
Absolutely, I think every artist has. Whether it's your first show, a big show, or an important one, there can always be circumstances that bring it out.
12. Do you have any tips for beginners on overcoming it?
Know your material and practice. There will always be nerves, but if you know what you're about to do, you can keep the performance as good as it can be for the people who are there to see you. Focus on what you're doing, not what you COULD be doing or SHOULD have done. Once you start playing, you'll be too in the moment to focus on the nerves.
13. Which bands have influenced you the most?
As far as our sound, The Misfits, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Blitzkid.
14. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
We were once asked if we wanted to sell stage-worn clothing, which I'm nearly certain was either some weird person or a scam. Either way, it was definitely strange.
15. What do you think of your fans?
We love our fans! While we see many of them at shows and on our Bandcamp page, we don't get to see all of them. But coming from a small solo project to be where we are today is amazing, and we couldn't be here without them.
16. What do you think of our site?
Love seeing the great questions asked of all the artists across many different genres.
17. Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Our brand new album "Choose Your Scare" is out right now on all major streaming platforms and RiseFromYourGrave.Bandcamp.com. Go check it out! And find us on social media to see all the dumb stuff we get up to.
