Interviews: Winterforge

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Melodic Death Metal band Winterforge from Poland. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

Our first name was actually different. I don't even remember why we decided to change it, but we did. Various ideas were thrown around, and one of them was Winterforge, which I posted on our internal discussion board. That cold atmosphere has always fit our music, so I wanted the name to reflect that chill. And the name just stuck.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

I’ve always loved the dark atmosphere of both death and black metal, but I’m also a big fan of groove and melody. Blending those elements isn't the easiest task, but it’s what I've always felt internally. I wanted to create a mix of atmospheric depth and raw energy.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Yes and no. Tom—who played guitar with us back then, though he's no longer in the band—and I have known each other for a long time, and my path had crossed with our vocalist in the past as well. However, when it comes to our bassist and drummer, we didn't know each other at all beforehand.

4. Each band member's favorite band?

That's a really tough question because none of us has just one single favorite band. But for the sake of the interview, let's go with Slayer, Opeth, Hypocrisy, and Mgła—as for who loves which, you'll just have to guess! ;-)

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

There’s no greater inspiration than our own lives, observations, and emotions, alongside the music we listen to. As for the lyrics, most of them are crafted around classical literature, mythology, modern novels, and the dark side of human's nature.

6. Where was your last gig?

Right now, our most recent performance was at the Gothoom Open Air festival in Slovakia.

7. Where would you like to act?

At Wacken, at Wembley, on top of the world.

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

Again, that's a tough one to answer—from active bands, maybe Judas Priest, Nevermore, or Machine Head?

9. Whom not?

I guess nobody has gotten under our skin that much yet! That said, I’d definitely prefer to share the stage with musicians who take their craft seriously, rather than goofing-off clowns—and no, I don't mean Slipknot! ;-)

10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?

It happens from time to time, but a shot of whiskey, a glass of wine, or a beer usually does the trick ;-) On a serious note, everyone experiences it to some degree. When the audience is great, stage fright disappears quickly—paradoxically, I think it's actually harder to play in front of a small crowd than a massive one. As Sting once sang, "Be yourself, no matter what they say." As a musician on stage, you often feel like everyone in the crowd is just waiting for you to make a mistake, but that’s not true. The sooner you realize people are simply there to have a good time at your show, the better. That said, you always have to keep in mind that what you do should be at the highest level—whether you're playing for 10 people or 1,000.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Oh, now we have a bit more room to play with! Of course, it’s impossible to name them all, but I’ll try a few: Slayer, Death, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Type O Negative, Pantera, Morbid Angel, Nevermore, In Flames, Soilwork, At The Gates, Chimaira, Gojira, Dream Theater... I’m still missing about 20 more bands here, so forgive us our sins! ;-)

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

So far, we haven't received any weird offers yet ;-) Still to come!

13. What do you think of your fans?

They are everything. Without their energy, support, and dedication, Winterforge probably wouldn't exist.

14. What do you think of our site?

I won't lie, I hadn't heard of you before, but you're doing a fantastic job supporting the scene and giving underground metal bands a real platform. Keep up the great work!

15. Something to add?

If you think we're doing a good job, please support us and your local bands—without you, we are nothing!
