Interviews About Albums: Nachtfalter - Still(Leben) (2026)
1. What can you say about this new EP/CD?
The album was created between 2024 and 2026. I composed, wrote, performed, and produced all the songs myself, so everything comes from a single source.
In my opinion, Still(Leben) has turned out to be something truly special. Musically, it brings together a variety of styles that merge into a cohesive whole. Dark rock blends with anthemic passages, melancholic moods, and occasional touches of neo-folk and metal. Some parts are danceable, others very quiet and restrained, but everything remains melodic, with my vocals adding a distinctive and somewhat unconventional character to the overall sound.
I feel that the album works really well as a complete piece of work. In that respect, it also differs somewhat from my two previous albums, as the electronic elements take more of a back seat this time around.
2. What is the meaning of the EP/CD name?
Still(Leben) is a play on words that combines the German words for “silence” and “life” (Stille and Leben). The title captures, in a way, the idea of seeking and finding peace in life. I think it’s a beautiful wordplay, as it leaves plenty of room for interpretation while naturally bringing a still-life painting to mind in the first place.
That’s also why I chose a cemetery landscape as the background for the cover artwork. To me, it captures the silence and transience of life in a particularly fitting way.
3. Which one is the composer of the CD/EP?
All songs were written and composed by me.
4. If you had to pick one song, which one would you pick?
I try to give every song its own distinctive identity and make sure that all the tracks are on a similarly high level. Since I don’t depend on the music having to cover its costs, I have the freedom to explore my creativity to the fullest. I don’t have to worry about whether something will necessarily appeal to a particular audience or whether it needs to.
This gives me complete compositional freedom, allowing me to incorporate whatever elements I feel work well within the music. The result is a strong sense of individuality that makes the Nachtfalter sound truly unique.
Overall, I see the album as a cohesive and densely woven piece of work, creating a distinct atmosphere that carries through from beginning to end.
5. Is there a special message in this EP/CD?If there is what it is?
Life is short, so make the most of it.
6. Are there some lyrics that you'd love to share?
The core message behind the title “Wie das Leben so spielt” (“That’s Just the Way Life Goes”) is that we can’t control everything in life. Sometimes, we simply have to accept things as they are, even when it’s difficult.
7. Which inspirations have been important for this album ? Like musically or friends, family, someone you'd love to thank specially?
Coming from an extreme metal background, I can definitely say that this time around, I drew inspiration from my own musical past. I revisited certain stylistic elements, particularly when it comes to the way melodies are structured and developed. As an example, I’d like to mention Abglanz, the fourth album by Mortal Intention, released in 2008, which shares a somewhat similar musical direction and overall atmosphere in parts.
Of course, I’d also like to thank everyone who genuinely supports us. First and foremost, our families, especially my wife Antje, as well as Nicole, the wife of our drummer Mario, who has been a tremendous source of support. My thanks also go to Kevin and our sound engineer Felix.
Last but not least, I’d like to thank Jörg, Andrea, and Wolfgang from Echozone, who have been part of the Nachtfalter journey for almost ten years now.
8. Something to add?
We’d be delighted if you continued to support us. And if you’ve never heard of us before but like what we do, we’d be just as happy to have your support.
These days, a band is nothing without the support of its fans. Whether it’s streaming our music, sharing it with others, helping spread the word, buying CDs or T-shirts (check out our Bandcamp page), or recommending us to local promoters and venues — and continuing to do so — every bit of support makes a difference.
We’re always open to playing live. Getting gigs has become increasingly difficult. Festivals tend to book the same bands over and over again, while clubs play it safe, with advance ticket sales often determining whether a show succeeds or fails. That’s why it really helps us when you spread the word about Nachtfalter and help get our name out there. Thank you so much for your support!
And with that, I’d like to thank you, Jon, for your questions and support, and for giving us the opportunity to introduce ourselves and our music in your zine, Breathing the Core.
With best regards,
