Track By Tracks: Coalitions – Closure (2015)

After finishing university I had no idea what I wanted to do. After being at home for a couple of months, Danny (lead guitar/vocals) came to me and said “do you want to work on this new music project I’ve got going, and put some vocals on it?”. After being sent over the tracks I knew this is something I really wanted to work on. Kind of a blessing in disguise.
1.Envy:
This track is the impact track, which is why we chose to have it as the opener of the EP. It’s straight to the point with what were about musically and lyrically. I wrote these lyrics as I felt like I was being trapped within envious people, people that claim they ‘want what’s best for you’, but deep down want what’s best for them, sometimes it’s hard to see past that, these people really started to make me doubt myself as a person. Personally I see a lot of envy in this world. But on the flip side of it, It’s kind of a shout out to my best mates for picking me out of a real low time. Lyrically this track is the most honest one on the EP.
2. Hollow eyes:
Hollow eyes was actually going to be the opening track to the EP before we switched it at pretty much the last second. I think Kelly who produced this EP really wanted to keep it as the opening track, but we switched it last second, big up to Kel Pinchin by the way. I’d like to think that this track is the catchiest on the EP, and I had so much fun writing the lyrics for this one. Danny had already had the chorus recorded for this track, when I heard the “hollow eyes” reference, I automatically thought of “the walking dead” which we all love in this band. So there’s a ton of references in my lyrics. Especially in this track.
3. What lies ahead:
This is another track with a hard hitting intro, and catchy verse. Lyrically it’s about wanting what you can’t have, a venomous relationship as such. When deep down you know it’s not working, but you can’t get enough of each other. Everything builds up to the point where you can’t bear to look at each other anymore. It’s kind of a reminder to myself to stay away from venomous people.
4. Days gone, bye:
This was the first track I heard from the EP when I drove over to Kels one afternoon. It was a massive surprise hearing Joe Edwards from Shields feature on it as well, it kind of sucked at the same time haha, only for the reason he absolutely kills it as a vocalist. This track kind of complements ‘Envy’ and ‘What lies ahead’ as I personally see it as the ‘moving on from peoples shit’ process haha, this is why ‘Days gone, bye’ was always going to be the last track on this EP, it was the Closure behind it all.
