Interviews: Abort

This is a new interview with the Progressive Post-Metal band Abort. Check out the interview and follow the band on their INSTAGRAM PROFILE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you plan it or came out just like that?

Atsushi & Jin: Both of us have an appreciation of gloomy and melancholy lyrics, music, and story, we feel sympathy for it and appreciate the aesthetics. This is the reason that triggers us to create the dark aura of this band name. In addition, we have the same experience of trauma in childhood and teenage years, therefore we decided it for the naming.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

Atsushi: I am so into and feel enjoyable when I sing everything!!

Jin: I don’t know, it feels like an enormous sense of release from my body and soul…but more concretely could be said we have been yearning to play this music genre from childhood, it is one of the little dreams for us to create our music.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Atsushi: Yes, we know each other even the band wasn’t formed yet before, something is quite magical by destiny, the story comes from 8 more years ago. When Jin- found a bunch of instrumental demos on his computer, all off-vocal kinds of stuff drove him wanted to find out a suitable vocal for him to sing and write down lyrics, afterwards, he found that I used to upload my cover videos which included Visual Kei and J-POP songs in my Youtube Channel, therefore he was immediately sent a message to talk to me!! Gradually we become friendly even he has bought a flight ticket to met me up in Nagoya (In fact, the main reason that he came here to attend his friend’s wedding party lol), what a great memory such as we got some drinks and went to karaoke box!

4. Each band member's favorite band?

Atsushi: My favorite bands are Dir En Grey and Merry!

Jin: Same with Atsushi about that I love Dir En Grey as well, we started to listen to them over 20 years ago! Personally, I do love The Gazette, Kagrra, Underoath, In Flames, even J-POP singers like Nakashima Mika and Aimer also! (OMG…I can’t bear myself to share more with you guys..)

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Atsushi: I only write lyrics so I don’t want to give an idea.

Jin: I love many great bands and appreciate them a lot, also Atsushi and I have got deep experience listening and playing Visual Kei for longer ages, meanwhile, personally, I love western heavy music as well, therefore, I want to compose the combination of both sides in the way of CHEMISTRY!

6. Where was your last gig?

Atsushi & Jin: We didn’t have any live show, the main reason is both of us living quite far away from each other, also our schedule doesn’t match enough, therefore we keep doing music with long distance. However, at least we won’t give up making music by this physical limitation, especially we are living in this digital era, right?

7. Where would you like to act?

Atsushi & Jin: We didn’t think about this question, just only keep enjoying good music. Certainly, we do have some goals by ourselves, such as keeping release and creating a better quality of our new music annually, finding out some proper label and contribute our songs to some competition.

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

Atsushi & Jin: We have no idea because so many more great music and bands on this planet, we always question ourselves “We are alright?”, so we are still learning to be better and better, but we do appreciate and cherish a chance if someone would like to feature with us.

9. Whom not?

Atsushi & Jin: People who are arrogant, rude and selfish, even disrespectful.

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

Atsushi: grab some drink!

Jin: Keep watching your fingerboard or even your musical instrument, your shoe, take the advantage of long hair to cover your eyes! I’m serious because it works for me!!

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Atsushi: Dir En Grey is the MUST.

Jin: Same with Atsushi, I was also inspired by Dir En grey, some great songs like “Zan”, “Yokan”, “The Final” made us so shocked by the composition and arrangement when we listened to it in childhood at the first time! But also Underoath and In Flames as well, their melodic and heavy pieces of stuff drive me crazy many times even I have ever cried!!

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

Atsushi: I don’t know we got a fan or not!!

Jin: My girlfriend is my fan.. xD. She has ever asked me why our music is not much heavy, I think she is pushing me and encouraging me! So let me prove it in the next EP/album!!

13. What do you think of your fans?

Atsushi & Jin: We are not sure…maybe we are extremely low profile.

14. What do you think of our site?

Atsushi: Sorry, I only speak Japanese, I don’t understand English anymore, it’s your turn…Jin

Jin: Very informative and systematic, such the professional level. I am also a designer who helps a load of clients to solve their cases, I would like to help you to optimize something if you get interested!!

15. Something to add?

Atsushi & Jin: Hopefully, more people would like to appreciate our music gradually, we would like to create some new and better things for you guys, please stay tuned for our next EP in March and upcoming album this year.
