Interviews: Eaten By Sharks

This is a new interview with the Deathcore band Eaten By Sharks from Canada. Check out the entire interview and give them a follow on their FACEBOOK PAGE

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you plan it or come out just like that?

Chris: We knew we wanted our band name to be extreme, much like some of the more techy and brutal bands that were out in the late 2000s or early 2010s. The name eaten by sharks was thrown on the table, it was a preconceived idea that one of the original members had based on his love for the movie, Jaws. As soon as he brought up the name, we thought it was a perfect fit and we liked that we could incorporate a nautical aesthetic (e.g., calling our first EP “We’re Gonna Need a Bigger Boat”, a quote right out of the movie, Jaws).

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

Chris: We enjoy playing tech death as we can pull in influences from all types of metal when writing our songs. We also enjoy the challenge of making tech death catchy and memorable. In the past we would go riff to riff, abandoning the typical song structure. In our new album, we blend technicality and structure, and I think it's some of the best stuff we have written to date.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Chris: Some of us had already known each other as we had played in previous bands together. When forming Eaten By Sharks, it took a while to find the right Drummer; luckily Justin, who had played in some local death metal bands, was available and picked up the songs quickly. We rolled through a couple of singers until we found Matt, online, doing vocal covers of Archspire tunes (not an easy feat, lol); he was a perfect fit and the rest Is history!

4. Each band member's favorite band?

Chris: It's really hard to nail down a favorite, but as far as inspiration for metal goes: Dan is a big fan of Suffocation. He got the “Pierced from Within” cd at a flea market and it changed the way he viewed the guitar. For me, it’s Death; their “Human” album was like nothing he had ever heard, he loves the riffs and crazy drumming. Tyler saw Symphony X and was blown away by the bass, the fact that the guy was playing everything so clean made him want to do the same with his playing. Justin was inspired by early Sepultura, jamming along with the Chaos AD album front to back. When Matt first got into heavy vocals it was System of a Down that introduced him to a more eclectic approach to phrasing and screaming, he also likes Tech 9 and Archspire when it comes to speed and using vocals like a distorted instrument to add even more aggression to a song.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Matt: Most of the songs on our new album are inspired by humancentric greed, destruction and corruption, and oceanic themes involving horror and death. Sometimes we look to horror films for inspiration; for example, I wrote the “cove gone wrong- mother's revenge” lyrics for Shallow Water after watching a classic shark gore thriller.

6. Where was your last gig?

Justin: Our last gig was in our hometown St. Catharines, Ontario Canada. It was our first love show since the pandemic. It was a wild night; you could tell people were just happy to get back out to see live music. Shortly after that, we went into our third lockdown and we haven’t played live since.

7. Where would you like to act?

Chris: We would love to get out to Europe. We know a few bands that have made the trip out there with nothing but amazing stories. From what I’ve heard Europe loves metal and there are some amazing things to experience over there.

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

Justin: Collectively as a band, it would have to be Despised Icon. What they were doing with the Death Metal/ Deathcore Genre is unreal, and I know Matt would have a blast throwing down on some of their sick riffs.

9. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

Chris: I think everyone gets stage fright in the beginning. I remember playing a show as a singer and the entire time I had my back turned to the crowd. Truth be told, I hardly knew any of the lyrics, maybe that had something to do with it. As you get more confident with your instrument and get more shows under your belt, the nerves dissipate and you start to crave the stage. Keep pushing it and you’ll be jumping off half stacks into the pit in no time!

10. What bands have inspired you the most?

Dan: When it comes to the style of music, we are playing in Eaten By Sharks, it would start with some of the old-school death metal bands that had a more technical style such as, Death, Carcass, and Gorguts.

Chris: We also dig off-time riffs so Meshuggah is a huge inspiration for us. Revocation and Archspire are some of the bands with a newer approach to tech that are also influential to our writing style. We like to blend that old school and new school death metal with some odd-time progressiveness.

11. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

Tyler: One of our fans requested us to play, at what we thought was a house party, but we soon realized that he was just using our extreme music as a weapon to piss off the asshole neighbor that he was feuding with.

12. What do you think of your fans?

Chris: Our local fans are unreal. Many have followed us for years and have become extended members of our shark herd. We have been gaining some new fans since the release of the new album, which is amazing as we put a lot of blood and sweat into its production.

13. What do you think of our site?

Chris: I love the format of the site and the focus on “core” type bands, Hardcore, Deathcore, Metalcore, etc. It has a mix of well-known and underground bands, giving everyone a chance at being exposed to a new audience.

14. Something to add?

Chris: To become a part of our shark herd, listen, subscribe and follow us on Merch/Pre-Orders Bandcamp - https://eatenbysharks.bandcamp.com/
