Interviews: OCTOBER THORNS

This is a new interview with the Progressive Metal band OCTOBER THORNS from the USA. Check out the entire interview and give them a follow on their FACEBOOK PAGE

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you plan it or come out just like that?

Our band founder, Dave Pando chose the name. It’s a song title from Flotsam and Jetsom.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

I’ve always been a fan of heavy music. As I got into my teenage years, I was drawn to more complicated, progressive styles.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Most of the band members had some contact with each other. The original bassist and guitarist were best friends in high school. The drummer and Pando knew each other. I came from completely outside their group of friends. I was at least 10-15 years older than most of them and lived in Queens while they were all in Brooklyn.

4. Each band member's favorite band?

Jofu: Death

Pando: Savatage

David Z: Rush and Michael Jackson

Chawki: Nevermore, Yngwie.

We all had common ground with Dream Theater.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

I usually write when I am hurt or angry. I see music as a vehicle to express things that words just aren’t adequate for. Music and lyrics can do more in expressing emotions or deep conceptual ideas than a discussion can.

6. Where was your last gig?

I just performed with ZO2 opening for Kings X and Stone Temple Pilots for a benefit show in Peekskill, NY.

7. Where would you like to act?

One of my dreams has always been to perform at Progpower USA. Glen does such an amazing job at putting those bands together.

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

Symphony X, Pain Of Salvation, Devin Townsend

9. Who not?

I don’t have a problem with anyone or any style of music.

10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?

Always. Just like Bruce Banner says, “I’m ALWAYS angry.” I’m always worried when I get onstage. I have to remind myself that being anxious and being excited feel EXACTLY the same. Your heart beats faster, you have butterflies in your stomach- you just have to trick yourself that you are excited to play, not worried. It works.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Dream Theater, Nevermore, Rush, Genesis, Pain Of Salvation, Faith No More, Pink Floyd

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

When I was on tour with Chris Caffery, we were in a signing line. I had a few people ask me to sign Savatage albums which I respectfully declined because I had never played on one!

13. What do you think of your fans?

The people that have supported me and my bands over the years are such good people. Nothing but love and respect for all of them.

14. What do you think of our site?

Breathing the Core is a fantastic site. Simple and to the point. The dedication to underground, underrepresented bands is commendable. Honored to be added to that group!

15. Something to add?

We are working on the 4th album from Drift Into Black, a recording project headed by fellow Grey Skies Fallen alumni Craig Rossi. It’s a prog-doom band that I am playing bass for. I am also doing a handful of shows every year with ZO2 covering keyboards and the vocals of David Z from October Thorns. I’m also finishing up tracking on my new project Critical Consiousness.
