Interviews About Albums: The Haptics - Second Best (2022)

In this new interview, we sat down with the American Rock/Post-Punk band The Haptics to ask some questions about his new album "Second Best"

1. What can you say about this new EP/CD?

This EP came together from four musicians who met on Craigslist/Vancouver over a shared love of post-punk. The songs range in meaning from songs about toxic relationships, past loves, facing off metaphorical firing squads, and other forms of everyday violence.

2. What is the meaning of the EP/CD name?

Second-best refers to a line in F.M., "Let me show you I'm 'second-best'...", a somewhat sarcastic plea to even stand in the silver-medal spot for recogniton.

3. Which one is the composer of the CD/EP?

All songs are co-written by the members of The Haptics. Cam, the group's guitarist, often brings in something he's been working on at home. Sometimes it's Brent, bass. The group will jam on that for a while and add their own layers and parts over it. Jin, the vocalist, writes her own vocals and vocal melodies, while Brent and Andre write their respective melodies and grooves. Sometimes it works this way, sometimes the flow is slightly different.

4. If you had to pick one song, which one would you pick?

Jin - Violator
Cam - Doubt
Brent - Connection
Andre - Giver

Seems like everyone has a different favorite on this album!

5. Is there a special message in this EP/CD? If there is what it is?

By rephrasing a situation, you can assume more of a position of power within that situation.

6. Are there some lyrics that you'd love to share?

"Giver" lyrics by Jin (vocalist)

I'm falling out, I'm falling in
I am a giver, I was taught to give
I'm coming through, I'm coming around
I'm pushing out to push it down

I had to keep a little give
I Had to keep it just to live
I Went to wish it all away
But something's in the way today

I'm giving you, I'm giving in
I used to think that I could swim
I used to stand a little higher
But now I'm just so very tired

I used to wish for little things
I used to sing out and let it ring
I never thought I'd quit the ghost
Of what it meant to hold you close

I'm falling out, I'm falling in
I'm giving it, I was taught to give
I'm coming through, I'm coming around
I'm pushing out to push it down

7. Which inspirations have been important for this album? Like musically or friends, family, someone you'd love to thank especially?

We would like to thank our friends and family for the support, as well as the many craft breweries of East Vancouver!

8. Something to add?

Love live Rock n Roll!
