Interviews: Submit Thy Will

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Alternative Metal band, Submit Thy Will from the USA. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

Well, it wasn’t the original name for the band. It’s funny, our band's name was actually Time to Kill before. We ended up finding another band with the same name that was already established. Not wanting to step on toes, we changed the name of our band to Submit Thy Will to give off that kinda medieval vibe! It was really just something that I thought about and pitched to the guys and everyone liked it, so it stuck.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

Musical freedom is probably the best way to describe it. There are not many rules you have to follow when writing metal music. It’s very liberating to know that when we all put our heads together and write something new, we can make the music we hear in our heads. It’s pretty much ingrained into us!

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Josue and I knew each other from school and friend groups. We actually met Angelo from a paper flier he put up in our local music shop, and we met Andrew at a festival where we were performing. He was our sound guy!

4. Each band member's favorite band?

This is one that I think changes a lot! It really depends on what we are into at the time. We will do our best with our ALL TIME favorites.

Shane: Black Sabbath

Andrew: Dream Theater

Josue: Johari

Angelo: Foo Fighters

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

That’s a broad question, to be honest. It depends on what is happening in our lives and the things we see around us that inspire what we write about in our songs. We always try and write our stuff so it can apply to many different situations. You might listen to one of our songs now and find meaning in it, and then a year later listen to that same song and it could mean something completely different. That’s the intent, to stay relevant to YOUR situation no matter how many times you listen to us!

6. Where was your last gig?

TerrorFest 2022! That was an amazing experience! We got to share the stage with true METAL LEGENDS David Ellefson (Megadeth) and Vinny Appice (Black Sabbath & Dio)! We also got to meet and hang with the guys in Helstar! James Rivera is such a great frontman! It was definitely a night we will never forget.

7. Where would you like to act?

Any and everywhere! Though a big personal goal for us would be Wacken! Definitely, shooting for the stars, but who knows, am I right?

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

Bands like DISTURBED, Bleed from Within and Bullet for My Valentine come to mind. Though I think another great matchup would be Mastodon and Lamb of God!

9. Whom not?

As much as we love them, Periphery and Polyphia are a bit out of our league at the moment haha! Those guys are such stellar musicians and I would probably just want to be in the crowd enjoying the show!

10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?

I think everyone suffers from their own type of stage fright. When you first start playing shows, the stage fright is mostly about your performance. Wondering if people will even like you. After you get more used to performing, the stage fight is more about your equipment. Hoping everything is gonna work well. The best advice we can give is to anyone starting stage shows is to just get up on that stage and go for it. If you really love music then just let it take over, all the fears and worries will disappear right after down beat! And the more you do it, the easier it becomes!

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

That’s another broad question for us. We all share 25% of the ideas for the direction of our band. We at least don’t move on until everyone is happy with the parts we make. Because of that, it’s kind of a melting pot for all of our collective ideas from all the music the 4 of us listen to. There’s some DISTURBED influence along with a bit of Foo Fighters alongside some Dream Theater vibes. It really depends on what track you are listening to. Our song ‘Her’ is very different than our song ‘Omaha’.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

So far so good on not being asked for weird stuff yet haha. People usually just want to take our set lists home!

13. What do you think of your fans?

Our fans are our friends. We love hanging out with all of you guys after a show! Whether you knew about us before you saw us at the show, or you discovered us on your own, we truly appreciate all of the support that everyone who enjoys our music gives! Thank you guys for giving us goofballs the opportunity to entertain you guys! It truly means the world!

14. What do you think of our site?

There is definitely a TON to look at! It’s awesome to be able to discover other killer bands out there doing what we do! I really enjoy that you can filter bands by genre, and country and that it's all alphabetized. It also seems easy enough to navigate. Defiantly dig the site!

15. Something to add?

The best way to find out what we are up to is to follow our Instagram and Facebook @submitthywill and to check out our website at SubmitThyWill.com! We are so stoked about what the future holds and this is just the tip of the iceberg! We are going on a serious journey and can’t wait to see where it leads! Hope to see you at the show, and remember – Bring a Neck Brace!
