Interviews About Albums: BURNING BIRDS - Where We Belong (2023)

Active since 2019,  BURNING BIRDS, which consists of Julien Rambaud (vocals/guitar), Léo Gross (drums), and Yohan Gomar Revel (bass), offers a heavy and nervous rock, fed by grunge, punk, and stoner.

After a debut EP “Take A Ride” released back in 2020, the French rockers are happy to reveal their debut album, “Where We Belong”. The record is out since March 25th, 2023 (CD version) and since March 28th, 2023 on major digital platforms.

1. What can you say about this new album/CD?

It's a transformation for the band, a first molt, we have deepened our work, our way of conceiving and making our music. It was important for us to have more time in the studio than for the first EP (2 days and a half). We were able to explore sounds, arrangements, and backing vocals a bit more. It's the beginning of the development of our sound as a real band. Leo (drummer) says it well: "The first EP was Julien's songs played by three musicians. This album is BURNING BIRDS."

Even if Selfishness (on the first EP) revealed what the band is. Then this new album was an opportunity for us to work with people we wanted to start a collaboration with. But also to continue with friends we've been working with since the beginning.

2. What is the meaning of the album/CD name?

This album is about the basics of who we are, what shapes us, where we come from (Dirty Town), family (It Flows in my Veins, Brother), friends (I Walk with the Devil), love affairs (Already Done, Keep it Wild) and relationships with ourselves and others (Out of the Cage). Then it was made with the people we use to hang around or work. The album was recorded in the studio where we usually rehearse, with the people of this studio, the demos were made with our friend Xavier Haentzler (drummer of the band Kobaltree) for the first EP. We had this feeling that this is where the band started from, that's why we called it Where We Belong.

3. Which one is the composer of the CD/album?

Julien writes the lyrics, the vocal melodies, and the guitar. Then we pass it all through the hands of the band where everyone can bring their ideas and changes. There can be exceptions like Brother where Julien wrote 90% of the entire song. We modify the music with each other's ideas. That's what gives our songs their identity, we really take the time to agree on what is being played. We often ask each other if there is a style that influences us at the time and we see how it can feed the music, bring a touch that would then be particular and would give all its specificity to what we write.

4. If you had to pick one song, which one would you pick?

It would be I Walk with the Devil. It allowed us to really have fun with breaks and changes like we love to do. We also had the opportunity to work on an ending that would be a strong reminder of what we had started with our song Selfishness but with more time and ideas. Then we had the chance to meet Astrid Wiesinger, who is an Austrian artist, who was there to rehearse for a concert in Morocco the next day. She agreed to play on the track even though she didn't know us. She didn't even listen to the track before, we just play the track, she did two takes, we layered them and that's what we got! For us, this is the magic of music and its encounters, we are happy to have been able to record it on the album.

5. Is there a special message in this album/CD? If there is what is it?

To be yourself, to be honest with who you are, don't deny your roots, but rather use them to find the strength, even if sometimes you have to dig pretty deep to find it... and love yourself.

6. Are there some lyrics that you’d love to share?

Ashes to ashes,
Losing time It wears the face And blows the mind
High speed race
Don't close your eyes It's alright.
High speed race
Don't close your eyes It's alright.
God loves all Those beautiful losers
'cause all, all were ready
To go through the danger
Here we are Brother Mad and mighty So kind so dangerous
Here we are Brother In a hurry to be.
We both know We need rest, Stupid robots
With a heart in our chest How can we deal with that mess
When there's no control
No fun at all
When we cross the line they've drawn
It's alright.
(Brother)

7. Which inspirations have been important for this album? Like musically or friends, family, someone you'd love to thank especially?

All the people around us, our friends and families, they make us dream and inspire us by being themselves and surprising. They carry us and believe in us and what we do, that's a powerful fuel to make something like this album! A big thanks to Valentin and Florian who inspired two tracks!

8. Something to add?

Thanks to you, Breathing the Core, your magazine, and the others are doing good for music bands, we are happy to have your support!
