Interviews: Backwordz
In this new occassion we have had the pleasure to interview the Nu-Metal/Post-Hardcore band Backwordz, from USA. Check out this band because they are amazing and do not forget to follow them in their FACEBOOK PAGE.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?
Kevin and Marcello came up with the name originally. It was one of those, "this sounds cool, and it looks cool on paper, let's use it," sort of things.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
We wanted to do something unique, and although rap and metal is not a new concept, our take on it is. We have a sound that is only made possible by our individual tastes and backgrounds in music, and the message we bring with it; we have a fantastic producer, Robby Joyner, to credit as well. Just all around, a solid team.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
Marcello and Kevin have been jamming together since they were younger, and formed the band with Eric after he had left Fire From The Gods. He laid low for a few months and was introduced to the guys through a friend during that time. When Eric first got in touch with me to talk about joining the band, I almost told him no, I thought rap and metal was a horrible combination. He was convincing though; he knew it was going places, and his conviction got me on board. Once I heard Grindstone, I was 100% sold. As for Robbie, he is our newest addition and knew Kevin and Marcello for a while, after we parted ways with our original drummer, he agreed to fill in temporarily, but it's safe to say we convinced him to stay. Haha
4. Each band member’s favourite band?
Favorite bands! Loaded question, we'll narrow it down:
Marcello: Blink 182
Robbie: Tool
Kevin: Sum 41
Alex: Further Seems Forever
Eric: Lauryn Hill
Marcello: Blink 182
Robbie: Tool
Kevin: Sum 41
Alex: Further Seems Forever
Eric: Lauryn Hill
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
Every song we write is driven by our desire to spread our message. What has made us successful so far has been our drive to success, this isn't just something we're doing because it's fun, although that is definitely a perk, we are doing it because it is a passion to make it big, and to spread a message of liberty, of freedom. We have an end goal in mind, and we aren't playing games. A phrase that I have lived by that was told to me by one of my professors in college was, "if you love something enough, you'll find a way to make a living out of it." I believe in that 100%, and I think the other guys in the band do as well.
6. Where was your last gig?
We actually just played our first show of the year on the 20th at the Korova with Being as an Ocean, it felt good getting back up on stage after working on a lot of stuff in the background for a few months.
7. Where would you like to act?
I'm not too sure about the other guys, but a venue I've always wanted to play at is the Glass House in California, Circa Survive is one of my favorite bands, and I found out about that venue because of them, it just looks cool, and the atmosphere from all the footage I've seen gets me amped.
8. Whom would you like to feature with?
There are a lot of bands I'd love to play a show with, but bands that we'd fit on a ticket with is a different story. It would be fun to play a show with Saosin or Underoath, those guys go nuts on stage. The crazier the better, we like getting down on stage and off.
9. Whom not?
We don't really have any bands we wouldn't play a show with. We have a song out called Elitist that is all about people who think they are too good for the scene they're in, or refuse to support other bands because they aren't the right "style," of metal. Our message is anti-state and self-ownership, and we'll play with whatever band so long as our message can get out there.
10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?
I remember my first show with this band, I was petrified. It was my first time playing bass live, and my stomach was in knots, the curtains pulled back and the intro to Grindstone started and I was still weak in my knees. The only thing I could tell people who are scared, is you just have to take a deep breath, remember your training, and roll with it. Be over the top in your performance, because that's the biggest wall when you get up in front of people.
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
I'd say the bands we listed as our favorites would also be our biggest inspirations for writing and performing, among other bands, certainly.
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
We're still pretty new to the scene, so we haven't had a chance to run into any weird stories with fans just yet. Just a lot of people who like to come out and ask Eric and I about politics, is all. I'm sure we'll run into some interesting characters over the course of this band, and we'll have plenty of stories to tell one day. I look forward to it!
13. What do you think of your fans?
We love them! Every release, we are just completely blown away by the feedback and support. We easily have the fanbase and interaction of bands 3 or 4 times our size, and we couldn't be more happy with them.
14. What do you think of our site?
I dig it! I like what you're all doing, and I can't knock the grind if it's real. That's what life is all about, and we're greatful you decided to interview us and let us be a part of what you're doing.
15. Something to add?
Again, we're so greatful for the chance to get our message out. We're greatful for our fans, new and old, and we're greatful to be where we are at, and be received by the public like we have been so far. So keep grinding, jam our new single "Statism," out now on Youtube, and Taxation is Theft.
