Interviews: Veiled Ocean

In this new occassion we have had the opportunity to interview the Post-Hardcore/Melodic Hardcore band Veiled Ocean from Germany. Check out the interview and this band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1.Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

We ́ve thought about our bandname for quite a while actually. Our lyrics are a lot about feelings and emotions and we wanted a band name that reflects just that. Each and everyone of us wears some kind of mask and just discloses a small part of what they really are or feel - even to the people that are closest to them. As calm as someone may seem on the surface, as churning one may be below. That`s where the analogy to the ocean and thereupon our inspiration for the band name came from.

2.Why did you want to play this genre?

Well, I guess we all just grew up with it. As far as I am concerned, the interest for hardcore-music came from my father and just developed over the years. I`ve always been fascinated by the power and energy that is been put into this music. We`ve been playing in different bands for many years now and all of them could be refered to “Hardcore” music. I guess it just was/is the best way for us to express what we really feel.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Most of us know each other since we were kids and others like one of our guitar players and our singer came from the extended circle of friends. We soon found out, we had the same interests and after none of us was in a band at that time we decided to make music together.

4. Each band member favourite band?

Arthur (lead vocals): Boysetsfire
Chris (vocals, rhythm guitar): Capsize, Counterparts
Frederik (lead guitar): The Ghost Inside
Peter (bass): Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rage against the machine
Sven (drums): Architects, Beartooth

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Most of our lyrics are inspired by everyday situations and people we get to know. The lyrics for our demo were written by our guitar-ist and have a pretty personal meaning to us and especially him. They for example cover the loss of his grandfather, nightmares, but also tell you to keep your head held high and always move foreward.

6. Where was your last gig?

Due to the fact that this is a pretty young band, we`ve not had any gigs so far. We wanted to focus on songwriting for the last few months. Now that we have a set of songs all of us are happy and can identify with, we have booked our first shows in the next few months and for next year.

7. Where would you like to act?

It`s not about one place in particular. Generally spoken, we love smaller venues, because they simply create a much more intimate and familiar atmosphere - for us and for the audience. In this way feelings and emotions can be transported way better and you feel more as a part of it.

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

We actually don`t want to set on one specific band/Artist. Generally we love to meet new people, play with bands we never played with and maybe even make some new friends.

9. Whom not?

We speak up against fascism, nationalism, rascism, homophobia and any kind of oppression and therefore categorically decline to play or feature with bands or people that try to distribute those kind of ideas to the public.

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

We`ve not experienced a thing such as stage fright to be honest. I guess it is completely normal to be nervous before you get on stage and we all are. But we also can ́t wait to get on stage because it is what we love. And that ́s pretty much the thing. You just have to keep in mind, that it is what you love doing, what you worked for many hours in your rehearsalroom and that the people out
there are here for you! There has been a situation, where our singer had a gig with his former band and pretty much lost his voice minutes before they started just because he was so nervous.

But as soon as he went out there the tension was blown away, he gave his best he could and the result was a crowd having a great time. Love what you do and do what you love.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Our inspiration comes from a very wide spectrum of music; Bands like Rise Against, BoySetsFire, God is an Astronaut, Stick to your guns, Capsize, Rage Against the machine, Verse, La Dispute, Smashing Pumpkins, Parkway Drive, Heisskalt, Blackout Problems, Taking Back Sunday, Nine Inch Nails, Architects, etc. and also local bands from our region.

12. What’s the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

Up to this point all of our fans have been really nice and there wasn`t actually a really weired thing.

13. What do you think of your fans?

They are the reason why we are able to do what we love. Making music. Eventhough some of them usually don`t listen to genres like “hardcore” they still tried usout and listened to our Demo. Now those people pretty much become our closest fans.

14. What do you think of our site?

We are really thankful, that there are people like you out there, who support small and new bands like us and keep DIY alive. Your site is a great resource for people who share the same interests and want explore new music.

15. Something add?

We really want to say thank you for this interview.
