Interviews: MJM
On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Hard Rock/Metal band MJM from Canada. Check out this band and follow them on their FACEBOOK PAGE.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, did you plan it or come out just like that?
Well, Michael J Miller is my name, and my initials are MJM... After forming previous recording acts, all
having a band name ie; RAPID TEARS, ADRENALIN, TOUCH. I realized that even though I had been the
main composer/music director, my identity was always assumed as just another band member. My identity
was at stake every time the band came to heads and broke up. It was at the time when I was writing the MJM
Ascension album that I decided to go solo. My producer Tom Atom suggested we use my own initials as the
the band’s name, MJM. Please be sure to annunciate the J so the name doesn’t sound like MGM, Metro
Goldwyn Mayer. Haha.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
It’s all about my guitar sound. I grew up on rock music. That distorted, heavy, crunchy guitar sound has
always been my favorite sound. The first time I heard a heavy guitar was when I heard ‘The Beatles’ doing
‘Revolution’ and ‘She’s so heavy’. ‘Jimi Hendrix’ pushed it to another level for sure. Then there was ’Led
Zeppelin’ and then my all-time favorite Metal band ‘Black Sabbath’. They set the standard for me. There’s
been a lot of great rock groups who helped influence me, but I shaped myself into my own artist/style.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
Yes, we had all met each other at different times, but it wasn’t until I went solo that I put this terrific group
of musicians together in the same studio to form the music group MJM. MJM was formed in 2002.
4. Each band member's favorite band?
Michael J Miller’s favorite band – The Beatles/Black Sabbath.
Tom Eakin’s favorite band – David Bowie.
Zsolt Henczely’s favorite band – Avantasia.
Stephany Dudas’s favorite band – The Foo Fighters.
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
Song inspirations come from anywhere and anything. I remember when I was a high school kid walking to
school, I would get ideas for a song that would be at the tempo of my footsteps. This happened a lot. I would
have to keep the idea going through my head until I got home to grab my guitar and materialize the song. I get
lots of ideas for songs when I’m just playing my guitar in my studio. All of a sudden a great riff just starts
pouring off my fingers. Then, I’ll think about it and turn it into a song.
6. Where was your last gig?
MJM’s most recent show was at ‘The RockPile’ in Toronto, Canada.
7. Where would you like to act?
I would like to act in Hollywood. Give me any role.
8. Whom would you like to feature with?
I would like to feature with ‘Robert Halford’ of ‘Judas Priest’. He’s a really nice guy, and his voice is the
epitome of metal music singing. He’s always been my favorite singer since I first heard him sing.
9. Whom not?
Justin Bieber.
10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?
I think we’ve all experienced that dreaded, nervous, and anxious feeling at one time or another. The best
way to overcome stage fright is to get on stage as often as possible. The more frequently you’re on stage, the
less it will stir you up.
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
The Beatles, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Kiss, Iron Maiden, Rammstein.
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
A girl once asked me to autograph her fanny. I said OK, but how are you going to show that to anybody?
13. What do you think of your fans?
The fans of MJM mean everything to us. We appreciate that they love our music and listen to it often.
They come to our shows and give us a great response with warmth and respect. We respect them back!
14. What do you think of our site?
I think your ‘Breathing The Core’ site is really cool. I want to thank you for promoting all the artists you have
on there. Your mission to help new Rock and metal bands is very appreciated by MJM and the other artists you
feature.
15. Something to add?
Yes! I’ve been making metal albums for a long time. I’m on my eighth album right now. I’ve written a lot
more material that has never been professionally recorded. I have a t least 150 song registered with the
Canadian Performing Rights Organization SOCAN. I would estimate that less than 20 percent of the material
I’ve written has been released. I’m in Canada, and Canada doesn’t support its own Heavy Metal music. It’s
really crummy! I just keep making music because I’m great at it. Most people would have quit by now. It’s
hard being a professional musician/composer and even worse in Canada! Please give MJM a good listen. I
write this music for all the Rock and Metalheads around the world! The band has to be seen. Spread the word!
